Yup, read the article and the script. Very funny
"So, is this your full-time job?".
I guess, if you could divert the person enough, you might even be able to ask if he/she has any pets, what kind of car they have, do you live at home...
On the other side however, as a friend of mine mentioned to me when I submitted a link to the article, these folks are just trying to make a living too. And I agree. They are being paid NUTHIN to call and annoy people. I have been fortunate in that most of the people whom I have spoken to, when I tell them, "thank you, but I am not interested" they only try one more attempt to keep me on the line before they hang up.
Gee, would the absolute lowest (ethical) form of employment be to work as a telemarketer for a legal firm trying to drum up business?

While I understand Jon's ethical doubts about tormenting people that are "just trying to make a living" I think that there are still enough job places in the world that don't require people to leave their ethics at home, nobody forces them to get that kind of job, they could do other jobs that are not ethically dubious.

we get calls on VOiP from other places - usually India. We use calling number display and screen calls that way, as apparently a do-not-call list only applies within your own country.
Last one I answered I pretended I spoke only Italian, telling him I didn't understand. At one point the desperate person said "I want to speak to the owner of the house" and I later thought I should have directed him to the Bank instead.

I guess I'm a hard a$$. As soon as they say, "Am I speaking to Mrs. so and so?", I cut in and say, "Excuse me, could you remove our telephone number from your calling list please." Some react coldly and hang up. Some are nice and say they will remove our number. One guy retorted in a spoiled childlike manner, "WHATEVER!" and hung up. By law, they are required to follow your instructions and remove your number.

Yep, briliant, too bad I don't many marketing calls since we got the do-not-call list... but I can apply this for people who call to get my vote or to have me participate in a statistical research...
