FAQ's & How-To's that don't work
Posts: 6
Using Mepis 6.0 I have just tried to follow the instructions under the Documentation/FAQ's section on how to create a boot floppy disk. The procedure specified does not work. It produces the following messages, which show that the mount & unmount commands don't work.
mke2fs 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
Filesystem label=
OS type: Linux
Block size=1024 (log=0)
Fragment size=1024 (log=0)
184 inodes, 1440 blocks
72 blocks (5.00%) reserved for the super user
First data block=1
1 block group
8192 blocks per group, 8192 fragments per group
184 inodes per group
Writing inode tables: done
Filesystem too small for a journal
Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done
This filesystem will be automatically checked every 39 mounts or
180 days, whichever comes first. Use tune2fs -c or -i to override.
mount: mount point /mnt/floppy does not exist
/sbin/makegrubfloppy: line 8: cd: /mnt/floppy: No such file or directory
cp: target `/mnt/floppy/boot/grub' is not a directory
umount: /dev/fd0: not mounted
GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)
[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
completions of a device/filename. ]
grub> device (fd0) /dev/fd0
grub> root (fd0)
Unknown partition table signature
Filesystem type is ext2fs, using whole disk
grub> setup (fd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no
Error 15: File not found
grub> quit
I can probably edit the script to work properly, but that is not really the point.
A. It is really important to ensure that How-To instructions actually work as advertised - for inexperienced users it is awful to be left with a set of clear instructions that fail.
B. There should be some more direct mechanism for reporting when someone runs into errors of this kind.
C. If, as I suspect, the problem is that you have changed the names of mount points under Mepis 6 from the previous version (I didn't use it and therefore don't know) you could give generic advice on how to modify scripts if you don't have time to update all of the documentation.

You need to provide a link to the specific HOW-TO you claim contains erroneous information.
I took a quick look in the most probable places it might be in, but simply don't have the time to do an exhaustive search.
