new laptop, need a new version of alsa
I bought a new laptop, an Aspire 3650. The sound doesn't work on Mepis 6 (Alsa version 1.0.10rc3,) but on a gentoo live-cd which has a significantly newer version of Alsa (version 1.0.11rc4), it does.
Are there newer kernel/alsa packages available? I tried apt-getting the kernel sources to grab default .config file so I can easily build a new kernel, but no .config.

Have you tried enabling open sound system in Mepis utilities ? OSS is usually the default sound system in Mepis and lately a few havent been enabled by default . As time goes by Alsa seems to be fading away. You might try that first and if it doesnt work post your sound chip info maybe someone can get you going.

Thanks! I switched it to
Thanks! I switched it to OSS and it no longer hangs after a sound event, but no sound.
It uses the Realtek ALC883 driver, which works with the newer linux kernel 2.6.17. The Realtek ALC883 driver with the older stock 2.6.15 kernel doesn't work on this new laptop.
I'm building a new kernel package and this looks like it will get me going.

If memory serves that chip has been a problem off and on for a while. Let us know if you get it going im sure others will be looking for a fix. Good luck!
