Constant Freezing
Hello all,
I knew to Mepis and I'm also somewhat new to linux. I heard good reviews from this distribution, So I decided to try it. However everytime I come back to my pc after a 30 min or so extent from being away from it, It's completely frozen. So I'm posting my DMESG in hopes that someone can provide me with some help. Please let me know if you guys notice any issue. I have ran MEMTEST and yes I had quite a bit of memory errors. Please Help!!

Memory Errors
Well im using a AMD 1800 athlon. One thing I find wierd is that it says my processor is unknown when i type "uname -p" is that suppose to happen? My graphic card is a 128 bit nVIDIA MX/MX 400. Also my card seems to lock up when I try and display OPENGL. How can I fix memory errors if that is the case? I'm really at a loss.
Linux StormX 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT Wed Jul 19 12:14:26 EDT 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
nvidia??
do you have the official nvidia driver enabled???
to see if that is the culprit, let's see if the problem occurs with the open source nv driver as well. To set the X server to use nv:
- open terminal
- cd /etc/X11
- su (enter and password)
- kedit xorg.conf
- find 'nvidia' (driver line), and change to 'nv'
- save and reboot.
Try this for a couple of days. If the problems have gone away, keep using the nv driver, or, if you definitely want the official driver, come back for some tips.
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
Memory Errors
When you run memtest it tests the physical memory in your rig and errors indicate bad connections bad memory in short its not a good thing. If you have other memory you might test it , no errors at all is preferred. All kinds of strange things happen with bad memory and that kind of thing should be avoided and its a problem that should be solved for reliable computing.

It appears that I have the official driver.

Jim,
So basically I need to go out and buy more ram? Last test was 2 days ago, and I let it run for 9 hours. I seen over 1400 memory errors. No way to fix this?
RE: Memory Errors
" So basically I need to go out and buy more ram? "
Looks that way did you reset and retest the ram to make sure it was seated with no obvious problems? 1400 memory errors is a bunch! DO you have more than one stick if so you might try them one at a time to see if any is good . If your board permits you might try moving them around to check for bad slots allso. Other than that if tests remain bad off that stuff.
jim
RE: Memory Errors
Jim,
Ok..Unfortunately at this time I do not have more ram, however I do have multiple ram slots on my mobo. So I will try and remove one to test each. If I do find out it's the RAM it may be a few before I can purchase new. Heh raising a family on one salary.. I gotta pick and choose my battles well
I will be sure to let you know my findings, Thank you for your quick responses.
RE: Memory Errors
Yeah i hear you that stuff dont grow on trees ! By the way what kind of board do you have ? After thinking a bit i suppose it could be other things too like bad capacitor-s or flaky power supply. If its got some age on it you might want to look it over good.
jim
correct driver
**ENTRY FROM XORG.CONF***

You have the open source driver, so the graphics should not be the problem. It explains though why OpenGL is flaky, since the nv driver uses the Open GL software emulation in the X server.

Freezes
Another thing i have had problems with is case fans attached to motherboard headers. If you have one disconnecting it for a test . I had a bad one like that a while back pulling voltage down on the board to the point it was super flaky after disconnecting the fan the board returned to normal. Tracking down these kinds of problems can be a pita at times, you just have to try anything you can think of to eliminate good from bad. Good luck!

Jim,
My board is about 5 years old. I was getting errors with windows as well. I had quite a bit of physical dumps, and then my system would reboot. So then I went and ran a memtest, and that in lies my problem. Way too many errors..
About 5 years old?
About 5 years old?
Say, check the caps on that motherboard and make sure they don't look anything like this:
If they do, you're in for a bit of a repair, and replacing memory probably won't do you much good.

I'm Back
Ok fellas I'm up and running again. Thank god my mobo looks nothing like that. I am quite happy to let you guys know I bought more RAM yesterday and installed it and so far no more memdumps or memory errors. I let it run 1 pass through my memory and no errors recovered
) So now I'm a happy camper. Now if I can only figure out where my desktop taskbar went??

Missing Task Bar
I'm sorry neostorm. If you forgot to backup your taskbar from RAM prior to swapping it out, that's your own problem
Actually, is it hidden? Do you have either a small, vertical box on the bottom right or left of your screen? If so, press it and see if the task bar is re-displayed. If it does pop back up, right-click on it and choose Configure Taskbar. Next, choose the Layout button to the left, and finally the Hiding tab on the right. You may want to make changes in the "Hide Mode" or "Panel-Hiding Buttons" sections.
If that doesn't help, then there may be some other things to try, but I can't thing of any at the moment
Jon
Missing Task Bar
Jon Du,
Nah I would have noticed that. I completely closed the taskbar. All I need to know is the shortcut name for the taskbar and I can use "run" to open however I can't for the life of me remember, but I'll get there hopefully.
That would be the kicker, I
That would be the kicker, I believe.
Possible File
Yeah, one of the files you might want to examine and edit is /home/youraccount/.kde/share/config/kickerrc
I noticed that there were a couple referrences to "Hide"ing variables in the file, so you might make a copy and then modify it.
Let us know what you find out. I could have sworn that someone ran into this exact problem a couple months ago!
Jon
Missing Task Bar
Try moving the mouse over to the extreme left and down . If it pops up you probably forgot to click open when mouse at bottom instead of left bottom . In whitch case right click desktop hit the hiding tab &click on unhide when mouse hits bottom of screen.

Kicker
Ok guys figured out how to do it. Through some testing. All you have to do is if you lose your kicker, do this
Alt+F2 then type "panel" in the box and boom all you needed to do then you can configure it from there. Next step is to learn how to build my own kernel
this is going to be SCARY!!

Right. After configuring the toolbar, you're definitely ready for the kernel.
Now get in there, champ.

I'm Still Waiting!
Look neostorm I don't have all day. You said you were going to build a new kernel now WHERE IS IT?? You've had at least 12 hours to do this. Quit slacking!
And if you loose that kicker bar one more time you're outa here
Actually, glad you found the fix and posted it. It will help others!

RE:Still Waiting
Ok kernel compiled however it doesnt let me boot into it from grub, and yes I added it to grub. if you dont use a debian based kernel you shouldn't need the debian packages right?

Can you explain what you mean by not needing Debian packages? Im not sure if i follow your thinking . You are running a Debian system and you will need corresponding modules and packages.

Compiling Kernel
Jim,
Yesterday, I spent a long time trying to build a kernel. The kernel did install, however when I booted into it I had no keyboard and mouse support. Hell I can't even create a bzImage. I followed mepis kernel guide down to the periods, and nothing was working for me. Do you happen to know of any good kernel guides for upgrading your kernel? Also does patching work the same way as upgrading? Like if I patch my current 2.6.15.26 will it display as the new version in uname? Apparently I just need some real helpful guides to building a kernel. I'm usually pretty good at teaching myself stuff, However I'm getting frustrated on not being able to find a good kernel walk-thru.
Completely Frustrated!
neostorm
Why, do you want to upgrade..
Why, do you want to upgrade your kernel? If I knew why then I may be able to help.

Compiling Kernel
It would appear you left out the particular functions in the build list that you need. And allso im wondering why you want to compile a new kernel when Warren has provided several allready built for most any need with modules that match.
If you are just doing it to learn there are how tos at debian.org that should explain most of the steps in detail. Debian is a very fast moving target lately so documentation is usually dated no matter where you get it.
In most cases like mepis recompiling the kernel is done to add missing pieces for hardware and the original build list is just added to with what ever you function thats needed. The options in the build list is mind boggling by the way only serious geeks will understand half of the options . I gave up on it for that reason. Its damn near impossible to build a kernel from scratch if you dont know what the options are referring to and there are a bunch lately as the kernel gets bigger and bigger.
If you will post what your trying to do someone can surely point the way.
jim
The Reason Why
Jim,
Well the main reason is because I'm big into development, I work for a software educational firm known as Scholastic and I love working in linux. Already I have learned a ton on n?x. I've only really been working on it for a couple of weeks. I love learning new things and I'm really knowledgeable when it comes to my hardware. I know I can build a kernel, It's not that difficult it just takes trial & error. Once I complete one it will be like riding a bike. I'm just trying to figure out why when I do a "make bzImage" does it not make me a bzImage. Or when you upgrade your kernel via the instructions on mepis why it doesnt work for me. I love cutting edge so updating my OS is something I feel I need to learn for me to be happy with myself. It's my way of self-evaluating. I am a sponge I must absorb
