MEPIS.org Forum Searchbar
Get the MEPIS.org Forum Searchbar Plugin from MyCroft.
What does the searchbar do?
It allows you to search for forum topics and content without actually having to be at the MEPIS.org website.
Lets say you're browsing the web and find a problem. Do a search on the MEPIS.org Forum Searchbar and find the resolution without going through the hassle of typing in http://www.mepis.org and then finding the Forum Search.
How to install it?
Click on the MyCroft link and then when you get to the MyCroft Website click on the link that says "MEPIS.org Forum".
A dialog will pop up asking to add the search engine. Click OK.
How to use it?
After you have installed the MEPIS.org Forum Searchbar (see above), take a look at your Firefox browser. At the top you will see an Address bar. Next to the Address bar (to the right) is the Searchbar. Click on the little picture (by default the picture is a "G" for the Google Searchbar) and then highlight the MEPIS.org Forum Searchbar and then click it. Start typing in the text area and press the Enter key (Return key) to begin searching the MEPIS.org Forum.
The MEPIS.org Forum Searchbar is cross platform (Windows/Linux/MAC) and is based on the Sherlock Standard of Searchbar plugins.

Very Nice
Sam, thanks for the link. I also learned a little more about the Google search pluggin
However, I just found out one thing that might cause a little problem. I have the NoScript pluggin on my system. This is a tool that allows site-by-site allowance or denial for running java. Very nice to reduce "stuff" from coming up. But, just like other warning tools, it needs to be "trained".
Initially NoScript disallowed my running the Mozdev java that prompted me to load the Mycroft extension. I told NoScript to "Allow mozdev.org", I repainted the screen and then I was good to go
Jon
I haven't experienced NoScript
I use the Adblock Security Suite.

Ablock Learner
Adblock.FilterSet.G
I had to edit the Adblock Learner extension to work in Firefox 1.5.6. It was originally only designed for 1.0. It was simple though. One can edit any xpi extension by downloading the xpi file and opening it with ark. Install.rdf is how I edited the installer information in Adblock Learner to accept firefox 1.5.
You can download the Adblock Suite either from the firefox extensions site or you can download it directly from my site by clicking here. The extensions have already been edited by my to work in the most current version of firefox.

Why ZIP?
It's a ZIP because I use firefox on Windows. At the time I edited those extensions I was on Windows. I've only been using MEPIS for about 4 weeks.

Oh yea
And I still dual boot because not all of my games work on Linux.
SAM
Sam, there is nothing wrong
Sam, there is nothing wrong with dual booting, most of us do, but the more you use Linux the less Windows you will see.
I'm currently dual booting with Vista rc1.

How do you like Vista?
I'm starting to use Windows almost Never because I'm getting better at finding my games for linux. Such as Doom 3 for Linux and Savage. I pretty much only use windows at work now.

Get Savage for Linux! What is Savage?
I don't
I don't and if I can't get NERO installed it will be gone tomorrow. The only reason I have it installed is that I'm a Field Tech and it's just a part of my job. When I'm not testing Windows or a new Windows app, I'm running Linux and some times go 3 month's or longer without seeing Windows, as matter of fact I'm starting to see more Linux embedded computers in the field than Windows.

Jimmy

My Linux
Jimmy,
I'm a Tech myself (I guess most of the more advanced people on this forum are techs).
I've run around 9 distros of linux and broken them to the point I don't like them. I've had MEPIS for almost 5 weeks and it's been about 4 weeks since the last time I saw windows. I post ALOT because I don't want people to get so frustrated that they wouldn't like it any more. I think they should take it from me and at least start out with mepis and stick with it until they get more advanced. But I think I've found my final distro.
I think the biggest drawback I found using linux is it's incompatability with my printers, streaming windows media, playing windows media, pretty much anything that has microsoft attached to it i couldn't get it to work in linux. But MEPIS fixed that for me. Not only that, the ATI fglrx driver is a b**tch to install and configure. I've tried it like 10 times and i've not gotten it to work. MEPIS has the fglrx ability built in.
That's why i've posted out the wazoo on this forum. B/c i've broken so many things that I've actually learned to fix alot of them in MEPIS. In fact I have not come across a problem in MEPIS that I couldn't fix except 1. The fglrx only displays in 1024x768 (my screen is 1280x800) and the Mesa driver is all screwey when I have 1280x800 set. So either way I have to have 1024x768. But I can live with that.
The reason why fglrx doesn't work correctly for my laptop is because I'm running a Mobility Radeon 9700. And if you check ATI's website for supported video cards it goes from Mobility Radeon 9600 and then skips up to 9800. Of all things I had to be cursed with that. Oh well.

Question
Jimmy,
I've got a question for you. I see on your signature it says that your iMac runs Debian. Are you talking about the new Intel-Macbooks? And does the iMac you speak of run Mepis specifically? Because I know Mepis is based off of Debian.

Jimmy Dual booting
Hi Jimmy,
How are you dual booting with vista rc1 and Mepis I always use Mepis but do repairs on Windows machines and would like to get used to vista before it comes out so I am ready to repair them new vista corrupted machines when they come out(snigger snigger). At the moment I use Acronis boot manager for windows and linux but this is not ready for vista and alot of the other boot loaders are not vista capable yet.I would be grateful for information on how to do this.
Cheers John
Sam, no, it's an iMAC 333
Sam, no, it's an iMAC 333 with 420MB RAM, it's about 4 yrs old now and it runs Debian Sarge when Etch goes stable it will run Etch. There is no MEPIS for PPC, but Debian has an OS for about every computer ever made.

Jimmy

Mac question
Thanks Sam and Jimmy, you answered my question about Mac and Mepis.
Now I can recycle my Mac topic and change it to another question
Jimmy Dual booting
John, I'm sorry I missed your post. I only use the Grub bootloader, if it don't pick up your Vista install just use the stanza from an XP install, it will also boot Vista.
