XaoS on Mepis 6.0
Posts: 224
I had XaoS 3.1pre5 running on Mepis 3.4. Now I've upgraded to Mepis 6.0 it doesn't work.
I got xaos_3.2-2_i386.deb, but it won't install, telling me "libsvga1" is missing. What
do I need to do?

I'm using SimplyMEPIS 6.0-1, what are you using?

When I said go to synaptic and search for it I meant the Synaptic Package Manager. It is located:
KStartMenu > System > Package Manager (Synaptic Package Manager)
What i mean by that path is to click on the KStartMenu (similar to where the windows start menu would be if it was windows). Then put your mouse over "System" and wait for the menu to pop out. Once you see the menu click on "Package Manager (Synaptic Package Manager)".
That's how you read "Menu paths" and they are also refered to as bread crumbs.

Using KPackage?

I think you were using KPackage,
Because another MEPIS.org user, Cramp, has informed me that he too has found that package in Synaptic Package Manager (I tell you how to get to it in the post above) but that it is not in KPackage.

The user indicated 3.4.
sag47, you sure that the people you're discussing with are running the same version?
It also looks like you forked the discussion.
Anyway, I can see the file on 6.0 in Synaptic. I only use Synaptic. Never had a problem.

Thanks for pointing that out,
Sorry but I'm using MEPIS 6. MEPIS 6 has everything you need as far as I know but I do not know what programs you require to run so I can't help you any further with this discussion. What do you mean by "forked the discussion"?

libsvga1 - Mepis 6.0
Posts: 224
Look guys, read what I wrote carefully.
Then read what you answered.
I went to Synaptic Package Manager via the start button as you said - search did not yield desired package. Then you said "connect to 'synaptic'" a bit ambiguous, so I went to www.synaptic.com - get it *connect*?
libsvga1 does not exist on this Mepis (6.0). The 3.4 system indicates (currently) on the mepis site that it was included in 3.4, certainly XaoS worked on 3.4. It is not in 6.0 release.
Now what I asked what "what should I do" - meaning where do I get a version for 6.0, or can I install the 3.4 version, or what.
It's in the repositories
Posts: 1109
I'm running SimplyMEPIS 6.0, and I see XaoS in the repositories when using Synaptic to search for packages.
I also see the other packages being discussed like libsvga1 (although the depedencies probably changed some between versions).
Make sure you've got all of the repositories available and you've reloaded your package lists.
After loading Synaptic (KMenu>System>Package Manager (Synaptic Package manager), click on Settings>Repositories and make sure you have them all enabled (it may be in one that's not enabled by default). Just click the boxes next to them to enable them (under the enabled column heading).
Then, Click OK.
Then click on the big Reload button you see on the Synaptic Toolbar (that will download a list of available packages to your PC from the repositories you have enabled). Then, use the Search feature in Synaptic to find XaoS (use the version in the repositories, versus the .deb you downloaded to insure compatibility)
XaoS is there. After it comes up in your search, just click on it and select Mark for Installation. Then click Apply, and Synaptic will install XaoS and all needed dependencies.

It's In 3.3.1-1 Repositories Too
Posts: 5513
beckwith, I just did a quick search on one of my OLD 3.3.1-1 Mepis servers. It is in there also. I even clicked on it to "install" it. When I do, synaptic tells me that it will also load libaa1 (for my box). I'm not going to do it 'cause this is a work box
According to the version info for 3.2-3, it is in the Testing branch of Debian.
However, in your very first post you state that you "upgraded to Mepis 6.0". How exactly did you "upgrade"? With a CD, saving "home", changing the repositories? If you are running 3.4 from your system, but running 6.0 from the live cd you can't "upgrade" anything. Can you please post your /etc/apt/sources.list so that we can see what is enabled on your box? Otherwise, you have a number of us stating that we can see/get xaos, but you are still unable. There seems to be a major disconnect of info here

Two answers.
1) XaoS is in the repositories, but is broken (failed dependencies) so it won't install. I was actually attempting to install from "xaos_3.2-2_i386.deb" that I downloaded to replace "XaoS-3.1pre5" that I have had running on Mandrake, Mandriva, Suse, ...
2) My "user" data is on a mounted filesystem "/user". When I "upgraded" to 6.0, I overwrote/formatted "/" on /dev/sda7, leaving "/user" -as-is- on /dev/sda10.
While I haven't got grub sorted yet, I have (in disk order)
1) windoze (yawn)
2) a fat partition
3) Mepis 6.0
4) Suse 10.0
5) Mandrake 9.1
6) 300GB user data
It works fine

Two answers.1) XaoS is in the repositories, but is broken (failed dependencies) so it won't install.
It installs with no errors if you use Synaptic and install the version in the repositories. I've already tried it and it works just fine in SimplyMEPIS 6.0 No errors of any kind.
The only "quirk" I see is that Synaptic doesn't automatically add it to the KDE menus anywhere. So, you'll need to add it yourself (or just type xaos from a console to run it). It runs fine, too.
Did you make sure the repositories were enabled in Synaptic under Settings>Repositories, and click Reload before trying the install, as I suggested in my last post?
These are the repositories that I had enabled when installing it. Do you see all of these respositories and are they enabled (check box in the enabled column)?

If you don't have these sources, and don't have them enabled, it may not find the needed packages. You need to use the repositories included in SimplyMEPIS 6.0, not an earlier version of SimplyMEPIS.
If simply enabling them and reloading the packages doesn't work, I'd suggest following another poster's advise and posting your sources.list
Can you please post your /etc/apt/sources.list so that we can see what is enabled on your box?
Here is a screen print of XaoS installed and running:

As for the newer .deb you downloaded, I don't know (haven't tried it). But, I do see the libsvga1 file you said was missing in the repositories I have enabled.
That doesn't mean the newer one will install though. So, if you want to use a newer version (versus the one in the Ubuntu repositories that's been tested and works), you may have to compile from source. You'd need to try it and see. If it's not designed for Ubuntu, it may not work.
But, the version in the Ubuntu repositories installs and runs with no problems in SimplyMEPIS 6.0, as you can see from my screen print above.

beckwith:
You can't just grab a .deb file that's not designed specifically for the distro you're using and expect it to work.
Too many things can change between different versions of different distros. SimplyMEPIS 6.0 is based on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, and uses the Ubuntu repositories.
I don't know where you got the .deb file from for the newer version of XaoS. But, it's probably *not* designed for Ubuntu. Otherwise, you wouldn't be seeing broken packages trying to install it.
The newest version of it in the Debian Stable repositories is 3.1r8:. But, even that one may not work in SimplyMEPIS 6.0.
http://packages.debian.org/stable/graphics/xaos
But, you're not running Debian Stable. You're running SimplyMEPIS 6.0. The one in the Unbutu repositories works (see my last post with the repositories I had enabled in my screen prints).
There is a newer XaoS 3.2 package availble for Debian Testing and Debian Unstable. But, you're not running Debian Testing or Unstable. There can be differences in the packages used in Ubuntu, and it's probably not going to work in SimplyMEPIS 6.0, or at least not without installing the versions it needs of all of the related packages).
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/graphics/xaos
If you must have the newer versions of XaoS and don't want to try and figure out how to compile it from source (along with any other dependencies that it may require), try Kanotix 2006-01-RC3. It's based on Debian Sid (Unstable). You'll see a download link to the latest Release Candidate on the left hand side of the page:
I'd suggest sticking to the XaoS package that is in the Ubuntu repositories to insure maximum compatibility with SimplyMEPIS 6.0. That one works just fine with SimplyMEPIS 6.0 (as you can see from my previous posts and screen prints).
You can't always get the latest and greatest version of a software package (unless you want to compile from source, and even then, you can easily break something if other software relies on having different versions of some of the dependencies).
To repeat:
=After loading Synaptic (KMenu>System>Package Manager (Synaptic Package manager), click on Settings>Repositories and make sure you have them all enabled (it may be in one that's not enabled by default). Just click the boxes next to them to enable them (under the enabled column heading). SmilingThen, Click OK.
If that doesn't work, you're probably doing something wrong (don't have the correct repositories enabled in your sources list, didn't use the big Reload button in Synaptic after enabling them to download the latest package lists, etc.).
There are some more repositories available for Ubuntu (that should work with SimplyMEPIS 6.0, too).
So, you may want to try looking through them for some of the newer software around (someone else may have wanted a newer version and took the time to compile from source themselves and work out any dependency issues and post a package that works with Ubuntu/Kubuntu 6.06, SimplyMEPIS 6.0).
Here is a thread with more repositories in it that you may want to look through for newer version. See the response to my question about respositories by Jimmy Johnson in this thread:
http://www.mepis.org/node/11152
Note that if a newer version of a package is in one of the enabled repositories, you can try it to see if it works by using the Edit>Force Version menu choice in Synaptic after highlighting a package you search for.

As you can see, I posted to Newbies, because I'm a newbie to this ubuntu/debian/mepis world. However I have been running a Linux system for 8 years now. But never really got away from the rpm based distros.
I have since totally reloaded mepis 6.0 reformatting the root file system - I have other problems other than XaoS. I have today done all things people have said about repositories, and finding XaoS is already there. Well it aint. I get an error when running Synaptic Package Manager when I select all
repositories and the select reload...
"Could not download all repository indexes (sic 'indices')
The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the corrected writing of the repository address in the preferences"
The first failure is:
http://apt.mepis.org/6.0/dists/mepis/Release.gpg Could not connect to apt.mepis.org:80 (1.0.0.0) - connect (113 No route to host). Followed by 22 more of the same ilk.
I have not changed any preferences or addresses.
Searching now reveals no XaoS. And obviously my network connection is working ('cos I'm here typing - and I just got my email).
When I get over XaoS - I'll looking for "meld" or "kdiff3" or similar.
thanx

I don't know what might be wrong. It sure doesn't sound like you're having the best of luck with this.
I'd try it again. I can update my package lists fine, and can even click on the link you got an error with and it downloads that to my desktop.
http://apt.mepis.org/6.0/dists/mepis/Release.gpg
So, either you've got a connection problem getting to it (router or something else blocking you), or the repositories were down at the time you tried to do the update.

possible router problem
Posts: 145
Hi beckwith.
Please take a look at this forum post for debian forums. It is an Australian guy who has a problem with every distro he's installed in updating. He can get on the web receive mail but the error he gets when trying to access the repositories is connect 113 ( no route to host). It is the same error as yours in that his router is looking for the web address eg archive.ubuntu.com on port 80 but it's looking for ip address 1.0.0.0. not the correct ip address. Right at the end of the post is his answer as to what he did. I appologise as I'm new to Linux and also not used to networking. It looks like you now have two possible errors, the router error like the Ausy guy and then back to your original error. BUT the guy in the post could sporadically get the odd connection to the repositories, so it could be that you were connecting every now and then to them but not correctly.
Link is

I'm just trying to crawl the internet looking for similar errors but this is all I've come up with. I'll keep looking in forums for other distro's. hope this helps a bit

Lovely place you live, the sunsets are supposed to be really neat in Ushuaia with the angle of the sun and the snowy mountains, hence the name island of fire but give me the Ozy hospitality and humour any day. Hey guys, a thought just hit me in the head (and it HURT!).
Jacko, you mentioned above that there was difficulty in connecting to the outside world and you were getting an error about port 113. That particular port is the "auth/ident" port. Many people, myself included, TURN THAT PORT OFF on the router so that they are effectively "invisible". Check www.grc.com and the section on "Shields Up" for his discussion on "stealth". So many individuals have all ports turned off to reduced their "visible exposure" on the Internet. However, I'm wondering if port 113 must be enabled to do some of the downloads through your ISP.
You can test the above by either temporarily disabling Guarddog, or if you just want to enable that port, go into Guarddog -> Protocol -> Internet "Defined Network Zone" -> Network Protocol. In there you will find "ident/auth". Click on the box until you get a checkmark (protocol is permitted). Apply the changes.
I remember the ramblings of the other guy who had "Extreme Distro Distress" you mentioned Jacko, but I don't remember the thread header. If this works, and you know the other link, perhaps that person will be interested too. That's only if it works. If it doesn't work then you can call me all sorts of bad names

Man Jacko you're good! Yes, "Du Quesne" is pronounced (by me) as "du kain". Usually only folks from the east coast (of the US) get it right. Most mispronounce as "doo KEZ nee". When someone asks me how to pronounce it I tell them, "doo cain, just ignore all of the letters and you'll be fine."
Your command of the English language is great for an English bloke. I'm an American, have a French name, that my father's dad changed, (who was Swedish), speak English but used to speak Japanese. And you think you're confused?

It's not a very good long term solution (since you'll want to be able to update your software from repositories).
But, you may want to take a look in the Extras CDs and see if this software is included (I don't know if it is or not).
You can also get SimplyMEPIS 6.01 on DVD from the Mepis Store, and it includes the same extra software as the CDs.

Hello,
I haven't changed any port settings, but I did try your suggestion:
"You can test the above by either temporarily disabling Guarddog, or if you just want to enable that port, go into Guarddog -> Protocol -> Internet "Defined Network Zone" -> Network Protocol. I then tried to "reload" and got exactly the same errors.

hello,
maybe (belated) at this point, I should point out that the Mepis 6.0 install that I used was from the DVD from "Linux Format" (Future Publishing UK) magazine 10/2006. The 3.4 version was also from them - 5/2006
if I recall.
Maybe there is build number somewhere - and you guys

beckwith, I have a copy of the magazine but I haven't yet fully checked out the version of Mepis on it. The only thing I have done is run the Live CD version. It seems to work ok for me, but then I can't test your situation.
Unfortunately, getting and sharing an md5sum of this dvd is worthless for comparing the md5sum to published values of Mepis 6.0 since they're different disks (more stuff on them).
About the best I can suggest, assuming that the disk might be bad, would be to get one from another source. There has been some confusion on this forum about another magazine that will have Mepis in it. I went to the website of "Linux Magazine", that is also known as "Linux Pro Magazine" in the US.
www.linux-magazine.com
The October 2006 issue will have Mepis 6.0-1 DVD. It should be available now in the UK and "very soon now" in the US.
The only other suggestion would be to download a new copy, but I'm assuming that that is not possible for you due to a slow Internet connection

Hi Guys I have the Linux Magazine issue 71 for October 2006. It has a Simply Mepis dvd for 6.0 on it . That's what got me started with this distro. One thing to try is that at first my dvd ran fine for live but had some errors for network settings when installed. Is it worth a try to run the dvd as a live version just off the disk and try the synaptic search for Xaos and see if it can do it without errors, if so write down all the network settings for eth0 and copy them in after the install. Just a thought cos its what I did for one setting, I forgot this cos it was so quick as I found it on another forum for a different distro.
It's worth a shot I think. If it runs live get back to us as we will probably need Mr Dookain's ( LOL ) help to sort out the settings. ( darned if I can remember where they are )

libsvga1 resolved
Posts: 475
MEPIS 6.0 does not come with libsvga1 as you've just found out. However it is available to MEPIS 6.0.
Open Synaptic by going to KStartMenu > System > Package Manager (Synaptic Package Manager). Then after entering your root password and synaptic finally opens press Ctrl+F or click on the button that says Search and search for libsvga1. You do not need libsvga1-dev because it's only the development libraries and headers. Software developers use them if they were to incorperate some part of libsvga1 into their software
You can try this method with any error. If it says blah blah blah is not found. Then try opening synaptic and searching for it because it may be available.
