Network Printing where MEPIS 6.0 is the server
Posts: 24
Hello,
I have a HP Deskjet 3845. KPrint finds and configures this printer fine, tests it, and all seems well. PCs in my home on the SMB network can see it, CUPS says all users are allowed, and I can print locally with no problem. However, when a WIN XP machine on the network attempts to actually use this resource, the printer fails to allow access and the XP printer icon is labeled "no access" or something to that effect. I have played with my CUPS settings as far as I am able, but nothing I do seems to make it possible for machines on the local network (Mac or Win) to use the printer. I would appreciate some advice...

Im no expert in this area but i think you need a package called swat to finish up your software needs and allow samba to deal with your printing needs as a server. Allso to be on the safe side you should back up the smb.conf file in /etc/samba folder just in case cause it will be modified when you install swat. If things dont go as expected you might need to replace the file to its original glory. If all else is configured that should get you going or so it says in the fine print. As far as mac rigs go i cant be of any help but if they are running OS10 or above i wouldnt expect any problems since its unix BSD flavor. Good luck!
