KDEInit Issue

I have a USB to IDE converter, I have this plugged into a hard drive, and it normally works great. Yesterday I plugged it in and Mepis brought up a box asking me what I wanted to do with the drive when I plugged it in. Usually I tell it do nothing, and go on, but this time I had the brilliant idea of choosing one of the choices, and then even more brilliantly I chose to make this change permanent.
So, now I did this and the first thing that happened is I received a message that says KDEInit could not mount \mnt\sda1. I thought this is strange, it has never done this before, so I click OK to the box and it goes away, but my drive never opens. SO there on the desktop is the mount point for my drive, I click on that, and I get the same error. So now I am thinking what do I do, I mad the change permanent, I unplug the drive, plug it back in same thing. So I figure I screwed it up, and will have to do a search to fix it later. Now I try and access My Documents from the link on my desktop for that, and guess what, same error. I have come to discover that what ever I did for the USB drive has also made it impossible for me to access my local HD as well, unless I am using Konqueror in SU mode, and then I can access stuff.
Any ideas on what settings I need to change Or what file I need to edit, and how I need to edit it. Thanks in advance for your help.

I know I rebooted, but I do not remember if I did so with the drive disconnected.
If you want to see what I selected just plug in a USB drive, a box will apear and ask you what you want to do, everything from open in a new window to do nothing. At the bottom there is a check box that says do this every time. I chose something that said open safely or something like that. and then checked off the check box. Now I am stuck.
My question is why is it affecting my built in HD as well?
FYI the is Mepis 6, and I am pretty much patched up, although I need to run update again soon.

That sounds like the place to start disconnect that bad boy and reboot again. I have a usb flash drive i will play with maybe it will shed some light on the situation. What ever you did seems to have effected your permissions somehow. You might look at your /etc/group file for obvious missing user name next to some of the groups.

I will also need to do a better job of editing my responses. Spelling errors everywhere. That is what I get for typing too fast. My interenet has not been hooked up at my new place yet, so I won't be able to respond later. I will keep checking here for any new replies while I am at work, and then again tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Another thought is create another user account till it can be fixed. My flash drive didnt give an option of choices so it was no help , it just opened with konqueror. I didnt catch the type o till you mentioned it you told on yourself.

I tried it with the drive unplugged.

Still no luck, then I forgot which file you told me to look at. I have written it down now so I will have it tonight. I will let you know tomorrow if it worked.

This has fixed my issue. I looked at the etc/group file, and did not find anything wrong.
Also when I connected the drive to it I did not receive the message I recieved before either. I may just move forward using this user.

Have you rebooted then rig since you made the mistake? Pluggable devices are handled by udev and it might clean up the problem with a reboot. I dont have any idea what you clicked though if you can remember what it was it might help a lot. But if you havent allready done so i would try a reboot.
