fontconfig

Hello.
since a couple of days i'm using a 20" wide screen TFT monitor. Adjusting resolution to 1680x1050 was a minor problem.
But the fonts have been very ugly. Looking for help I found fontconfig and subpixelrendering seemed to solve the problem. But after a restart fonts are as ugly as before and only stopping the session and restarting the X-server mostly solved the problem.
Rarly 'dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig' was neccesary to solve the problem.
How can I change the configuration permanently?
