For those with NVidia Cards and Old Monitors - blank screen after boot solved

I just wanted to share with any newbies (like myself) whom spent hours trying to get the nvidia-glx driver to work with MEPIS and failed due to an old monitor.
After many hours searching and trying this and that I have found the solution and it was very easy to implement. Information was discovered at various spots on this forum.

First, use the MEPIS Utility to load the latest driver for your card.
(System Configuration/System Administration/MEPIS Utilities) Enter root password if not in root mode
Click on Mouse and Display
Click on NVIDIA tab
Click on nvidia(new) and then apply
Utilities will then d/l and intall driver

After this end session and hit Alt-Cntl-BkSp to reload Xorg

this is where many may notice a malfunction

Hit Cntl-Alt-F1 to enter into text mode

Login as root

type dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

this will allow you to reconfigure the xorg in a more controlled way,

Select the options that apply to your system, selecting nvidia as driver and glx as a module, be sure to deselect the dri module.

After you complete this step, hit Ctrl-Alt-F7 to switch back to graphics mode

You should still see that same nothingness...hit Cntl-Alt-BkSp again and Xorg will reload the new configuration,

Voila!! like me you should now have accelerated OpenGL at all the lovely resolutions that you like.

I may try that

Thanks. I may try that and see what happens.

My PC fails to boot properly about 30% of the time using SimplyMEPIS 6.0 with the nvidia driver. If I get a blank screen, I just power down and try again.

Usually the second time does it (as long as I don't press F2 during the bootup process). lol

I don't have this problem with other distros (including older version of SimplyMEPIS). So, something is strange with it. I'll give your solution a try and see if that improves my percentage some.
