Mepis Wiki in french

Hi,

I'm a french user of Mepis and would like to contribute by working on the translation of the Mepis wiki. I'm looking for help to initialize the french section of the wiki.

Well, it seems that AdrianTM

Well, it seems that AdrianTM was right (http://www.mepis.org/node/11293#comment-41040), it's been 4 days since I proposed my contribution and I still have no answer. I guess that there must be somebody somewhere who is in charge of the Mepis documentation project, may be one day he will read this ... so I'll try to be more specific in my request.

There is a french forum for the users of Mepis (http://www.mepis-france.org/) with people giving a lot of their time to help other users. They are doing a great job, but it seems that they answer the same questions all the time :

- how to get my mepis in french ?
- how to get my wifi working ?
- my USB modem doesn't work (Alcatel Speedtouch, Sagem 800)
- ...

For those repetitive problems, I think that the best answer is a link to a wiki instead of scanning the forum to find the last time that the same question was answered. I guess that it's the reason why there is a wiki on mepis.org too. My initial thought was that it was a better idea to contribute to the existing wiki instead of creating a specific wiki on mepis-france.org, but I wonder if that was really the best choice.

There are already spanish and italian sections in the wiki, all I'm asking are guidelines to create a similar french section and then translate some english pages and add some specific pages for french users. If you are not looking for help for the translation of the wiki, just tell me, I'll spare a lot of time.

hi sam

Well here I am but I don't know what to do to help with the wiki in french.

Should we submit articles ourselves and who validates it?

I don't catch how this works at all.

Regards

Jess

i think like this

You need to sign up in the wiki, and you'll receive a password. With that, you can add articles or improve other people's articles.

A wiki is an organic thing, so it will grow in leaps and bounds. Start adding content and one day someone will notice it needs to be organized and it will happen....

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

Sorry about the wait

Sorry that it took me so long to get back to you about this. You can read about what was holding me up in my blog entry.

First let me say thanks, Samuel, for wanting to undertake doing a French version of the documentation. Next let me say that I would like to get your database and wiki setup for you.

I will try and get in touch with AdrianTM to see the easiet way to do this since he has a bit more experience with the wiki then I do. I will keep you posted on the progress of this.

French Wiki up and ready

The French wiki is ready to be put into production.  It took me a little while today to get things configured correctly.   You can get to it by going to www.mepis.org/docs/fr.

Let me know if you need anything else.  I will have to enable your account and give you the correct permissions once you create an account.

First try

I hope that your new job is going well, thanks for taking the time to set up the French Wiki.

I already have an account (login : SAM), but it seems to work only with the English Wiki. So, I created a new SAM account in the French section. I tried some translations on the main screen and it seems to work well. I will have more time next week to try the Wiki, I will keep you informed of my progress.

Updated user

Sam,

I updated the wiki to give you admin rights. You now have the ability to give people the right to modify content and escalate user privileges. Let me know if you need anything else.

Images

I have a question about images. It seems that the images pool is proper to each language, so right now we have to follow these steps for the translation :

- Go to the English article and copy the source
- Dowload the original images linked to the article
- Create the French article and paste the source
- Translate the text
- Click on the link to the image
- Upload the image

It's quite time consmuming actually. Is there a way to copy all the images from the English version to the French one on the server so that we don't have to download and upload each image individually ?
