Cd Drive Locks System

Hello All Im a new mepis user and so far i have been nothing but pleased. I am noob when it comes to all things linux however i have spent over 3 hours googling through this site and others looking for the answer to this problem. That given here is my problem. Very simply insert a Cd into the drive blank, audio, data it doesnt matter close the drive wait 5 sec and bam system locks completly. I havent been able to find anything that breaks the lock, removing the cd ctr alt esc etc. nothing works except a reboot. Thats my problem any and all comments and suggestions are appreciated. The system is and old dell desktop specifically a dell xps t650r with 256 ram. Mepis is installed on a 20gb slave hd with win 98 still on the original hd using grub to boot into mepis. It has two cd drvies one on top of the other the top being a dvd/cd and the bottom a cd/rw made by samsung i beleive. I used the cd drive to install mepis from the live cd. Please help a miserable noob who just wants to play some cds.

Can you boot a CD on the

Can you boot a CD on the drive, are both drives locking up the system? I think the system is locking up because it can't read the disk, but if you can boot to a disk then that is not the problem.

MEPIS Help Files: http://www.mepis.org/docs/index.php/Main_Page

INTEL P-IV/HT 3.0GHz - 2X256 DDR3200 - SimplyMEPIS 6.0-1

What version of MEPIS do you have installed?

automount

i suspect you've run foul of the automount system.
so the Cd is inserted, the CD is mounted by the system and then only root can unmount it.
I've had it occur intermittently, but not currently, and sometimes opening the CD in konqueror again and closing it again will allow the drive to proceed to unmount on demand.

make sure that you have closed any window that may be accessing the CD
change to a konsole
change to root by typing
su
give the password
and try
umount /dev/cdrom

if the system calls it /dev/hdc ot /dev/hdd try those too.

let us know what happens

Thanks for the help, but the

Thanks for the help, but the problem is with the mount not the unmount. I never even get the cd open and after I insert a cd I cant do anything. As soon as the cd spins up it locks no mouse movement, keyoard doesnt work, NOTHING. Im gonna try turning off the auto mount and mounting it manually. Will report back soon sorry for the long delay since last post I was away. Thanks again.

Thanks for the help, but the

Im wondering if dma is enabled , its worth a look it may be part of the problem. As su in konsole run
hdparm -d /dev/cdrom if it doesnt return 1 (on) run
hdparm -d 1 /dev/cdrom to turn it on.

I have the same problem

Jimmy,

The way I understand this problem is that he can boot from a Read only drive, but it is the R/W that is freezing the system.

I have the same problem and my R/W CDROM is also made by Samsung.

What I would like to ask you experienced folk is there a list of hardware that does not work with Mepis 6, so that we do not look for a solution that does not exist.

Many thanks,

Alex

I have the same problem

One other thing to check is jumpers on the drives. If they are set to cable select set them to a master slave configuration with the master at the end of the cable.
