HOW DO I FORMAT IT.

Try booting your MEPIS CD and use QTParted and delete what is on the drive, commit, create a fat16 drive and commit. After you create the fat16 you may need to format it again as fat16. If that don't work take it back.

Hi, put the MEPIS cd in your

Hi,
put the MEPIS cd in your machine (Mepis 6.0) and plug your usb drive before starting your machine; once kde has been loaded, right click on your desktop, choose 'run command' in the menu and type 'qtparted'. In qtparted choose your usb drive and format it (with fat32). Plug your stick out and plug it in again in order to see if Mepis recognizes it. If not you have the following alternatives:

1. use fdisk or cfdisk in a xterm in order to format your stick; I prefer this methode, I find it better than using qtparted;
2. look at the geometry of your usb-stick; it is possible that your stick has a bad geometry (=hardware problem, in short) and in this case, you have to set the geometry of your usb properly (google it, there is a lot of how-to on this topic);

I have the same stick as yours and I encounter no problem with it and mepis; I bought a traxdata usb-stick (2G) and I had the same problem as yours; it was a hardware problem. Now the usb functions well.

the MEPIS CD you specified

Go here http://mirror.cs.vt.edu/pub/MEPIS/ and you can get the 6.0 CD or the 6.0-1 DVD.

u3 and usb with linux

As best as I can tell the U3 Launcher stuff does not work with linux and can only be removed through a special application. Reformatting doesn't do it. You can Google "U3" or "uninstall U3" for more technical info.

Basically stick it in a Windows machine and select uninstall from the U3 Launch menu. Be careful in what you select. If you uninstall applications and accidentally take out the Launcher app first then the whole thing is screwed.

There are downloadable uninstall apps from third parties and the pen drive manufacturer. I believe the Sandisk one is on the drive itself. I can't check because the Sandisk U3 pen drive I had is now in the trash in about 4 pieces (not kidding about being careful with that uninstall menu).

If you still want to do pen drive launchable apps in Windows you can get the same stuff without the U3 junk by Googling Portable Apps. Or better yet toss the Windows versions and boot Puppy or DSL until we can do it with Mepis.

After reformatting the drive

After reformatting the drive (fdisk) did you mkdosfs?
Are you able to read type 6 drives? I had trouble with a new 2 G type e drive until I reformatted it from type e to type 6 and mkdosfs.
