Mepis 6.0 will not recognize 2nd DVD-ROM drive

My computer has a DVD burner which is recognized as /dev/cdrom and works well. I also have a 2nd DVD-ROM drive that my system does not recognize. Mepis 3.4-3 recognized both. Mepis 6.0 detects the burner drive only. I don't know how to correct this problem. I'm sure it involves editing some system files. Can anyone help me. I will need some delailed instructions on how to do this.

Pentium 4 Processor 640 with 3.2GHz
DDR2 533 1GB 2DIMMs
160GB SATA Hard Drive
ASUS P5LD2-VM motherboard
NEC ND-3550A 16X DVD+/-R Burner
Sony Internal EIDE 16X DVD-ROM Drive

Its probably the way its hooked to your rig. Let me know how you have it connected & maybe we can get you going.

I am having problems with the dvd reader drive on my setup too. I have a cd stuck in there that will not eject or appear on the desktop (even after reboot). Any suggestions?

I <3 PAPERCLIPS!

NOTE: Turn off your computer first
All you need is a paperclip my friend. It's the best tool a Tech could have. If you look closely at your CD/DVD Drive you will see a teenie tiny hole that has the diameter a little bit larger than a paperclip. Stick the paperclip in and the drive will popout mechanically.

If you have a new gateway model such as the GTxxxx series (I have a GT5040) then it's a little bit different. Where the CD/DVD drive is located look at the little crack that goes across the drive horizontally. You'll see a small nick in it like where a paperclip should go!

If you don't find what I'm talking about then tell me what make/model computer you have because EVERY CD-ROM made in the past decade is equiped with that little hole for the paperclip.

Did that help?

Yeah, you can use the paper

Yeah, you can use the paper clip to force the tray open, but that does not really solve the problem. This happens intermittently on both the dvd drive and the cd burner. Every once in a while the cd eject will not respond, or the drive makes a noise like it is trying to eject, but does not until the computer is shut down. On reboot (before mepis is loaded) the cd trays both work as expected. Also, there is a funny floppy drive icon that appears when a cd or dvd is loaded. Not a problem in itself (I just ignore it), but it may indicate something else is wrong.

I'm not the most fluent with Linux but I will try to help you fix your problem. I gave you that paper clip tip b/c I thought you wanted your CD. I knew it wouldn't fix your problem, just get your CD. Smiling SAM

A locked drive needs to be unmounted

Try this.

open a console window, su to root and type
umount -a
and press the enter key

Now try ejecting your drive. If there is no change, you might have a compatibility issue such as a non-atapi compliant drive, or it may be the other way around, a motherboard that doesn't agree with atapi compliant drives, like a particualr Asus board I am working on right now at work and it really sucks (but the board still may be faulty)

By the way, for all you techies - did you know that LiteOn drives in retail packs come with a purpose built eject pin? Now that's some useless information that may even help you to get some sleep at night.

I asked the same question but inside of another thread and got an answer that worked.

Both of the previous posts

Both of the previous posts fail. The DVD drive is the only drive that I can semi-reliably use. The cd burner does not even seem to be seen by mepis most of the time. The DVD drive usually automounts as system:/media/hdc instead of /media/cdrom as I edited in fstab.

Is there another file I should be looking at for the mounting locations?
