Frustrated with mepis 6.0 & xorg [solved]
I have spent ages trying to get mepis 6.0 to display the desktop at a resolution of 1024x768 but it refuses & will only work at 800x600.
If I install mepis 3.3 it gives me 1024x768 as so does windows XP.
Mepis 3.3 uses XF86 & Mepis 6.0 uses Xorg, I dont know if this is the cause but I would like to be able to uses mepis 6.0 at 1024x768, so can anyone help?
My graphics card is a Nvidia geforce MX400 and my monitor is a compaq V55.
below is my Xorg.config file.

Sure
They changed the way it detects monitors starting with SimplyMEPIS 6.0 RC2 for some reason.
I see a lot of posts in the forums with the same issue.
Boot from a Live CD, then press the F3 key at the boot prompt and select 1024x768 from the popup table of resolutions, then press enter to continue booting.
Then, go to Control Center> System Administration > MEPIS Utilities and make sure the correct frequency ranges are selected for your graphics card and monitor.
With mine, I eventually found a monitor type that worked OK with it that had the same frequency ranges.
Then, use the Install MEPIS icon on your desktop and reinstall X (when you use the Install MEPIS utilities, you'll see a menu choice to reinstall X). It will use what you have set running from the Live CD. So, the next time you boot into your hard drive's install, it should be OK.
If not, chances are, Kubuntu would recognize it OK.
It recognizes my monitor as being a "Plug and Play" monitor and sets the correct horizontal and vertical frequency ranges, giving me the desired resolution and refresh rate options, even though SimplyMEPIS doesn't recognize it properly.
Then, e-mail yourself the /etc/X11/xorg.conf from Kubuntu and overwrite the same file in SimplyMEPIS with it (that worked for me). I wouldn't do this unless you have to, as then SimplyMEPIS utilities don't even show a monitor installed (everything in the setup screens for it is blank). lol So, it could cause some problems that I didn't see.
Here is a thread with something else you can try if your refresh rate options are not as desired (I had trouble with the refresh rate MEPIS wanted to use, which is why I used the xorg.conf file from Kubuntu originally).
http://www.mepis.org/node/11029
Chances are, just pressing F3 from a boot prompt when booting from the Live CD, selecting the correct resolution, and resintalling X from the "Install MEPIS" utilities will work for you though.

if you're not afraid of the command line
- open a terminal
- su + password
- cd /etc/X11
- kedit xorg.conf
- goto 'SubSection Display'
- under Depth 16 change "Modes 800x600" to "Modes 800x600" "1024x768"
- save file and restart X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
done
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
Docs Project
Take a look at the MEPIS Docs Project -> http://www.mepis.org/docs/index.php/Monitor_and_Display_Setup
I think initially what you get by default is what you select when you first boot the live CD and select by pressing F3.
I've got the resolution and frequency I want now. This is what I did :-
Deleted the modelines in xorg.conf Section "Monitor". Created a new modeline with the console command gtf e.g. "gtf 1152 864 70" dumps the modeline for 1152x864 @ 70HZ. I then pasted this modeline into xorg.conf Section "Monitor". Then in Section "Screen" I edited the Modes resolution to be "1152x864_70.00".
Read the link I posted above.
Thanks
Thanks TheGreenKnight for giving us the info. I have now learned a new command! I'll give it a try on my laptop and see if I can find new and improved ways to break things
Jon
Easy fix? Hopefully
Your problem sounds very much like the one I had. If I remember right that thing was fixed simply by remowing "#" from the line: #Option "MetaModes" "1024x768, 1024x768" (almost at the end of the file), save file and then ctrl+alt+backspace or reboot. I'm not completely sure, but I guess it was so.
It's not hard to try anyway... Good luck
Its sorted
Thanks everyone its working now.
I used carlops's method to get it working:
