No Sound w. SB Audigy and 2 TV-Cards *solved*

Hey, I could really need some expert help:

Mepis is running very well on my pc, but I cant get the sound to work.

- Volume at KMix is at 100%

- I have two tv-cards, but Mepis recognizes them as soundcards!

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks, mac..

copy of my lspci output

Hi mac

Here's a copy of my output of lspci I have 1 tv card and it lists it as a video controller and 2 audio cards, so I don't think thats a problem. When I installed my tv card my sound stoped and for some reason I had nothing enabled in the full kmix mixer, even though the kmix speaker showed 100%. Kaffeine played tv and no sound.

0000:02:01.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (rev 05)
0000:02:01.2 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [MPEG Port] (rev 05)
0000:02:01.4 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [IR Port] (rev 05)

I checked the master, master mono and pcm in the output tab. ( green light on )

In the input tab I have line and cd lit.

And in the mix tab I have the red light lit on mix.

This gave me all the sound for desktop, games and Kaffeine.

Saying that it could be something else entirely I'm also new at this Linux / Mepis thing, just sounds familiar to me. However if it is something more serious there will be an expert along shortly Smiling

post back and let us know

Cheers

Mixer Settings re-checked -

Mixer Settings re-checked - are ok.

But apart from that I get an error at xmms when I try to play an audio file:

----
Couldn't open audio

Please check that:

Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard
----

KMplayer or Amarok cant play files too, but no error output there. They just open the file and close it within a few secs.
Maybe MEPIS just installed an audio driver for my tv-cards and forgot my SB Audigy? Is there a way to override it?

Thank you...

mac

Hi MacIf you open the full

Hi Mac
If you open the full kmix mixer window, what does it say in the bottom box with the balance slider. The reason I ask is it will show the sound hardware that mepis thinks it's using. It might actually be using an onboard soundcard, or have detected a wrong hardware type which needs to be blacklisted.

It says: Audigy 1

It says: Audigy 1 [SB0090]

there is another option in the dropdown menu i can chose, its
SAA7134, but there are just three mixers, two for linein and one for video.

Ah, and Amarok gives me now driver errors...

My KinfoCenter shows following info:

Try going into K menu,

Try going into K menu, system configuration and selecting sound and mutimedia then sound system then try test sound to see if KDE plays sound ok. Also check to see if the auto suspend if idle after 1 second is checked cos kde can take over the whole sound system and not release it to other applications.

yep, already tried it, but

yep, already tried it, but still no sound...

raaaaaaah... Somehow I can

raaaaaaah...
Somehow I can hear sound when I play a flash file... thats weird.
Had my speakers at 100% when a flash ad popped out of nowhere on a website. Scared the hell out of me...

But any other audio does not work! No mp3, wave,... and there is no sound when I press the Test Sound/Midi Button...

Thank you..

mac

ok

one last thing then I have to go to work, sorry.
Try opening a Konsole typing alsamixer press return then use the right arrow key to move along till you see in the top left under item
that it says Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack then try pressing m for unmute.

After that I'm out of time and out of ideas, unless its a module loading problem which I cant help with I'm afraid.

Someone else with more knowledge will probably pick up this thread. I'll try to monitor it from work as a lot of the people on here are from USA area so time difference means a bit.

Yep. I tried it with

Yep. I tried it with alsamixer and kmix but it does not change something, execept that my speakers background noise is very loud, when I activate the digital output (thats normal, because my audigy card is not digital). I found an "override device location" field at Soundsystem-Hardware(Tab), but I cant figure out what to enter...

Thank you Jacko..

So if someone else has a good idea, tell me!

Ask for Mos

Hi mac
Have a post in this forum and ask for Mos as he's really good with sound problems. Post in the hardware / sound section and he'll probably reply. It's always good to double post between here and mepis lovers as some people read both and it helps to pick up threads quicker.

I'll still keep looking for answers for ya but I'm pretty much a noob on Linux and Mepis, sorry. Also have you tried the Ubuntu forums as Mepis is very closely linked with Ubuntu

Yep I tried the Ubuntu

Yep I tried the Ubuntu forum, but(!) when I rebooted my system twice this morning, MEPIS starteted with full sound after the second reboot. Don't ask me why, as I did not change anything between the reboots...
Well, but it works and I'm very happy now.
Thanks for your ideas jacko.

Great news Mac

Hi Mac

Excellent news mate, glad it's working. Even ( LOL ) if none of us know why.
