3D Desktop Switcher for MEPIS!!!

This is probably one of the coolest features on MEPIS Linux! Rather than using your regular Desktop switching applet (the little squares) give 3D Desktop a try. It shrinks your currently viewed desktop into a single side of a cube of all of your desktops. You then "spin" the cube to choose which desktop you want to go to. Each side of the cube has a screen shot of the desktop it's representing so you know which desktop you're going to! Give it a try because it blows the Windows Vista 3D Alt+Tab out of the water!
To view how to install and enable it then click on the link below

I've been watching the XGL

I've been watching the GLX...er...XGL (XGL, GLX, is my dyslexia getting me, here?) progress; reading about jell-o window frames and spinning cubes, since the summer announcement came out.
Fun-looking stuff, I'll admit; but, I'll have to wait for the cube to icosahedron patch to make it to me.

Actually, I've been able to get the basic 3ddesktop thing running. Where I'm having difficulty is in setting up any "hotkeys" for it. Sam, when I try to follow your "Integrating..." steps, I get to step 1, "Go to KStartMenu > System > System Configuration (Settings) > Regional & Accessibility and then open Input Actions." However, step 2, "Now click on (highlight) "Menu Editor Entries"...." I don't see that option. Instead, I'm receiving a general-purpose "Open With" dialog box
I'm using KDE 3.5.3.

Hi Jon / Allen
You guys are so funny
( for foreigners LSLIFOMC )
Jon, I've done it by not highlighting the option just left click it as normal and then when the window opens the app just click new action then start to follow the guide for putting in the shortcut name ( I think it was 3d desktop switcher )
Jon would anyone mind ( I asked after sam asked me in a different thread, but I don't think any mods picked up on it ( guess you cant read em all LOL ). Would it be ok to put a thread about the world community grid and crunching data for scientists to use and promoting my team ( as it's all for free like a charity thing ) in the general topic area or anywhere you would like it put. I thought I'd ask as I didn't want to break any rules or upset anyone.
Cheers Guys and Girls.

Dang it Liz, you and Allan give me a link to what appears to be a very funny movie, and I'm stuck on my non-speaker-enableed backup computer! My network connection is nessed up this weekend, so I'll have to wait till Monday whan I can check it out with sound.
And I'm still angry that you can put in such miles (sorry, Kilometres) but you don't come up here to visit us (sob). Of course, maybe Warren could plan a Mepis Meet down in Oustraiia

CaneToad is a very funny movie, but not eligible for a G classification. Parents should watch it with their kids for their own education.
It's funnier when you've lived in Queensland in the cane toad belt but really good overall.
Visiting the US will probably have to wait until I've paid off my kids - 2010.

THANKS!!!

You guys are awesome,
thanks for the support on the article. 74 readers already! meaning 19/day so far. That's a new record for me. As for the article I am going to review it and edit it to include tips given to me from Jacko and to make it more user friendly to help get Jon set up with the hot keys. It will be updated within the next day or so. I'll put another posting on here when it's changed. Sory for not answering any questions right away. I took my girlfriend home for the weekend to go 4wheelin for the first time (her first time). God I love 4wheelin. Below are links to some pictures to show you guys a little bit of what my life is like in the United States! (I say US b/c I know some of you live in Europe). EU is AWESOME. I've only been there once though and wish to do it again.
My House and Racing
Racing and 4wheelin
My New Movie (about racing)
My Annapolis Job
I'm not at a MEPIS machine right now (at work) but as soon as I get near one I will investigate what you mean by "open with" and fix the article accordingly.
Thanks again guys and I'll be posting more cool stuff such as graphic and web design tips (images) using GIMP and other cool programs.
Thanks again for the KB support!

Hi Sam
.... Also if people don't get the Win appearing on pressing windows+V they might have the keyboard incorrectly setup as a 104 key not 105 key keyboard ( ROFL as I did ), it might stump the odd person ( Didn't stump me for ooooohhhh more than 10 minutes lol )........Cheers Sam

Hi Sam
I must be lower than noob level as I didn't get win+v I just kept getting V. That I eventually found out the default keyboard set up in Mepis doesn't have the 105 key layout with the Windows keys on.

Jacko,
What did you do to change the default keyboard setup? Because my MEPIS detected all of my keys.

Keyboard Layout
Posts: 145
Hi Sam
I used K menu system configuration (settings), then regional and accessibility, then keyboard layout. In the window there's a layout tab and in this tab you can add or remove keyboard layouts and also change the keyboard model. I changed it to generic 105 key ( international ) PC from something I can't remember but didn't have all the keys. All I got as an example when following your guide to select windows key and v for the key combo win+v all that appeared in the window was v as the keyboard model didn't support the extra keys ( i.e the Windows key ).
I think Mepis install set up the keyboard as generic 102 key model by default ( or I did it wrong when being prompted for the keyboard at install cos at my age when we started they only had one keyboard rofl )
Cheers

Hey, Sam.Will it scale to 20 v-desktops?
I just adjusted my desktop to add all 20 desktops in KDE. Then I turned on 3ddesk. Since I don't have different desktop wallpaper, it's kinda boring, but once it starts spinning, well, it's kinda nauseous
It's like a big, fast, randomly spinning, stopping, ellipse-o-desks! Pardon me
PLEASE LET ME OFF THIS RIDE

3d desktop switcher
Posts: 5
I just went through your tutorial and it worked perfectly for me. I added the pager applet to the panel to give me even more control of desktops. I run mepis 6.5 b6 mostly and it seems that at start of 6.o the pager applet has been left off the panel on default install. Took me a while to figure out how to add it, now I have lots of control over my desktops. This beats the heck out of windows xp. I am not even interested in windows vista now that I have mepis. I should at least get to know windows vista (I think that is what micro$oft calls its new o$) enough to qualify any of my comparison comments though. I hate to spend the money on all the upgrades needed plus the o$ itself per each computer. I don't mean to bash ms, I can't seem to avoid it though. Thanks for the 3d desktop tut.
Mepis has been and is the greatest Linux!!!

Hi Sam
Just rated your 3d desktop switcher as perfect as was your starter guide. It's pretty cool and easy to do ( if you had a good howto ). Once again excellent mate and keep up the good work. If you have a wheel mouse the centre wheel will spin the cube and when pressed will select the correct desktop, this was the only thing you didn't mention ( pressing the wheel ). Also if people don't get the Win appearing on pressing windows+V they might have the keyboard incorrectly setup as a 104 key not 105 key keyboard ( ROFL as I did ), it might stump the odd person ( Didn't stump me for ooooohhhh more than 10 minutes lol ).
Once again great.
Oh and check this answer to your question about crunching

I pasted the answer and yes I'd love to have you on our team. If you want my e-mail address post here or a new crunching thread and I'll find it mate.
