Go the GPL Police

Ok, we've been a little harsh on the GPL Police on this forum at times. They are gpl-violations.org.

But today, when I followed up on an ASUS provided mini-distro with no source code - which I want - I got myself removed from an ASUS forum and my posts removed.
Sorry, guys, wrong lady you got there.

As I remarked in the removed posts, I was quite happy to discuss our failure to get source code with gpl-violations.org and will join a lot of forums in the next few days to spread the word.

I guess ASUS are smarting after a previous run-in with gpl-violations.org
http://gpl-violations.org/news/20040325-iptables.html

It does disprove the theory on the ASUS forums that no-one at ASUS reads the posts in that sector of the forums.

So, really guys, thanks for pulling us into line and drawing attention to the licence rules, because we are all smarter and will check out any other potential breaches.

Clarification Please Liz

Hey Liz, perhaps it is because I had a nice dinner with a little wine, but I'm not real clear on the situation. Can you clarify please was the problem you had with ASUS or gpl-violations.org? Do we need to spread thw word about not-so-nice ASUS or non-so-nice gpl-violations.org?

Yes, according to even my basic understanding of GPL, if you request source code, it must be provided to you. Even if it's not redily available on a website, you should be able to get a pleasant email to the effect of, "Give us 'alf a mo' and we'll send it right along :-)"

I might have misunderstood

I might have misunderstood my reading of the requirements, but I formed the opinion that the source had to be made available via the same means as the binaries.

Somebody enlighten me if I got that wrong.

I've not found

I've not found any signs that these people admit that they have used stuff under GPL. I've not found any offer to let me have the source code.
So I consider that ASUS has to be considered as having breached the conditions of the use of GPL licenced material, and have notified the GPL Police so that they can look further at the claim and consider action if necessary.

Do you know what GPL

Do you know what GPL program/code they used and didn't provide the source? How do you know?

isolinux, ubuntu bits

isolinux, ubuntu bits; having difficulty finding my way around the filesystem.
it mounted as
mount /dev/sda4 -t proc /mnt/sda4
which I did by trial and error going alphabetically through the list of filesystem types in man mount

and doesn't conform to a bin, boot, etc, lib type of filesystem.
as everything is stripped out, and only a rare readme or copyright notice left it isn't easy to find what is in it

Where Can We Get the Asus Stuff?

Drlizau, where can we get the Asus stuff that you're looking at? Is it downloadable from their site, ir is this on a CD that was in with some product that you had to purchase?

2 places

it was on a cd with a piece of hardware, and that didn't run in my hardware. so i searched the site and got an upgraded version "Instant On GM8"

http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/Barebone/Spresso/InstantOnGM8.zip
the file is an iso which installs onto free space on your hard drive - if you have the right hardware. There are signs it is built on kernel 2.6.15-22-386 gcc version 4.0.3 (ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5)
and alsa 1.0.10rc3

Another violator...

D-Link lost in court, and was ordered to pay Welte's expenses.

This is a very good time to write the folks at D-Link and tell them what you think of their theft of GPL'ed code. Personally, I never cared for their products, and certainly won't buy anything of theirs in the future.
