Is a Dual Core Processor USED Initalized in Mepis as it should?

I just bought a Socket AM2 AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ Dual Core Processor.

And Mepis runs on it fine.

And in Hardware Info is recignized as such.

But is Mepis actually using it's Dual Core Capabilities?

Or is it just running as One Processor?

If it's only Running as One.

Then what Kernal is it that I need to get it to use it as Dual Core?
If any.

I read it in another thread here, but Never seen the answer.

Please Help no need for a Super Chip if it's only being Half Used.

I have the same CPU.
Read this about how to install the k7 kernel:
www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Install_new_kernel

The example is for 686, just change that to k7

Thanks a BUNCH, I never knew Mepis could utilize the 686 or K7 Kernal's.
I'll have to read the above links you gave me tonight.

I was worried I might have to go back to Kubuntu which won't allow me to run a Couple of my favorite programs, Like Limewire.
This also explains why when I kicked up Q4 last night it didn't see my CPU as Dual Core.

Thanks again, I'm in your Linux Savvy debt...
If I can ever help you or anyone here PLEASE let me know.

I've tried what was on the pages.
Got it to load the Kernel once, It "CRASHED X"

I've tried 686 the Ubuntu Kernal and the Kernel Suiggested which was the one I got to load, that Crashed X.

Now what?

Did you get yours to ever work?

If so how about telling me your EXACT settings, and downloads so that I can give them a shot?

At this point I've got NOTHING to Lose.

I have a Dual Core 64bit CPU and it's going to run as a Dual Core. I didn't put out almost $500 bucks just to let it sit here preforming the job a MUCH Cheaper Athlon64 Single Core does.

Which video card? You

Which video card? You probably need to install restricted modules too search for kernel number in Synaptic and install restricted modules.

It's an ECS aka: XFX 6200 PCIe Slot 128mb DDR onboard Supporting 256mb Turbocache

I've tried the restricted modules I've even found the Kernel Number specified in Synaptic.

I'm just about to pull what little hair I have LEFT OUT...

Anyways Thanks, Any Ideas I don't Care it's worth the shot.

I found out my Problem.

My AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ Dual Core Socket AM2 CPU is a K8,
And not a K7 Processor theres where the problem lay.

Your CPU must be I guess is a Socket 939 which is of the K7 breed, If I'm not mistaken AM2's where the start of the K8 class of CPU's.

While they maybe Dual Core, the K8 n K7 are totally different animals altogether.

Anywho, I loaded Ubuntu 64bit "Dapper Drake" 6.06.1 onto my HD, it auto installed the 2.6.15-26-amd64 generic Kernel onto my Computer.
Which detected that it was a Dual Core right away.

It auto upgraded to 2.6.15-27-amd64 generic.
I searched through Synaptic and found the Tweaked Kernel for the K8 breed.

2.6.15-27-amd64 K8, since I loaded the K8 Kernel that thing books, and it wasn't to shabby on their generic kernel either.

I realize Mepis is a 32bit OS which I don't have a problem with.
I'm not putting Ubuntu above Mepis they are both Great distro's.

It's just that I thought I'd better let you know that the K7 Kernel "Won't Work" n "Why it Wouldn't" work on my PC.

It's only because the amd64 generic or the K8 Tweaked Kernel isn't avaliable in Mepis as of yet.

That's true, mine is 939

That's true, mine is 939 socket. I didn't know about this difference.

This is also helpful although it's not a full tutorial yet. I just wrote it in reply to a post on the Tech forum.

http://www.tafusion.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=362#362

It is a little more detailed and will get your system running more smoothly with the 686 and k7 kernel. I recommend the 2.6.15-26 kernel rather than the 2.6.15-27 kernel becuase the 27 kernel has more bugs in it since it is not completed. There's a reason why the MEPIS developers use the 2.6.15-26-386 kernel rather than the 2.6.15-27-386 kernel as their initially installed kernel. It's more stable.

If someone wants to update the documentation on http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Install_new_kernel then they can. I don't have time to right now but I thought you guys would find that more helpful.

2.6.15-27 kernel has some

2.6.15-27 kernel has some security fixes therefore I consider it's the logical one to recommend, if it doesn't work use the 26 one.

Please report bugs you find

Please report bugs you find within the MEPIS 686 and k7 kernel by clicking this link:
http://www.tafusion.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=122

Any bugs reported will be dealt with accordingly. Reported bugs will help further the development of the 686 and k7 kernels whether you're using 2.6.15-26 or 2.6.15-27. The more problems that can be resolved in those kernels the fast a 64-bit version of MEPIS can come out. Thank you for any reported bugs.

An in-depth tutorial for installing both the 686 and k7 kernel will be posted soon.
