Not Too Bad

Thanks bills and Sam(s?). I saw the article on Slashdot this morning. Thanks for posting about it bills.
Sam, I just went through you instructions. Not bad, but I did the "konsole thing" so to decompress the file is did
$ cd my/tmp/directory
$ tar xfzf *tar.gz
Then cd'ed into the directory and copied the file to /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree
The addition that I had to do is change the permissions to make it executable (as user root)
# chmod 555 libflashplayer.so
Now, I just need to go out and find some annoying flash websites

Hey Jon(s?),
Yea well it's easy to test if it's correctly installed. Just right click on a flash animation and it should say About Flash 9. And if you want a flash site to test it on go to my engineering site at http://www.team9.tk/ click on continue to team9.tk because it's a free domain and there are advertisements. But once you click continue they will all go away. Then click on the BIG Team 9 Picture and it will take you to a flash site. If your flash is incorrectly installed then it will show up in HTML automatically.:jawdrop:SAM

Jon,
Why did you put xfzf behind tar? What does that modifier mean? I did tar --help to find out but got nil.
From what I could get it means...
x > extract files from an archive
f > --file=ARCHIVE > use archive file or device ARCHIVE
z > filter the archive through gzip
But why f twice?
I mean, when combining multiple options shouldn't there be a - in front? For example...
tar -xzf *.tar.gz
To me the option that would make the most sense for extracting would be...
tar -xf *.tar.gz
Your method of tar xfzf *tar.gz does not work...
SAM
P.S. The reason why I didn't tell newbs how to extract through the terminal is because it would have been more steps for them to take. They would have had to change directories and yatta yatta yatta. I felt that a newb could handle Ark since it's so similar to WinRAR and WinZip.

My dad is a Gordon fan

My dad is a Gordon and Johnson fan.
He is a Prof. Firefighter and was the commander of the crew that actually put out the fire in the Pentagon on 9/11/2001. The crew that relieved his were the ones who put up the GIANT American Flag on the Pentagon that you may have seen famous pictures of.
They called him up and and asked him to be part of the picture and he was like... "I'm tired, my crew has already left, and I just want to go home". He had been there for several days from what I remember.
Well when NASCAR held one of it's first races after 9/11 they asked all firefighters who had fought in 9/11, and who had their uniforms, to ride with the drivers around the track when they do the loop in fancy cars. The firefighters were asked to write who they wanted to ride with.
My dad put Jeff Gordon. But he was taken so they asked if he wanted to ride with his team mate, Jimmy Johnson. My dad was like Hell Yea! So after they had done the loop and my dad got more aquainted with JJ, he turned to JJ and said, "Here, take this. This is the badge I wore when I put out the fire in the Pentagon".
All in all that's a good story for the kids however I still kinda wished my dad had saved that badge for me. I realize you probly aren't the real JJ but I thought it was a cool story you might wanted to hear.
Sorry for going off topic!

chmod ERROR
Posts: 475
The addition that I had to do is change the permissions to make it executable (as user root)
# chmod 555 libflashplayer.so
For some reason my system i guess is retarded. Hehe, but I did some research for learning how to do the CHMOD command and after reading it I feel this is a better format for making it executable.
# chmod a=rwx libfla*
a is for all (meaning user, group, and others) and rwx is for read, write, and execute. And the * at the end of libfla* means to do ALL files that begin with libfla and end with anything after that.
Click here to see where I found out how to do this! And to learn about the chmod command.
Jon, please don't be insulted that I am correcting your commands. But I just want to get everyone on the right foot. You don't need to do the chmod command on libflashplayer.so. I only copied it into that directory and didn't even run the chmod command and it worked fine. So chmod was an unnecessary step.
Hopefully you guys learned something because I did by doing research!

I take that back Jon,

I take that back Jon,
Your chmod command is formatted correctly after reading this short tutorial on changing the letters to binary to numbers...
Here's the page I read up on.
http://catcode.com/teachmod/numeric.html
So typing:
chmod 555 libflashplayer.so
chmod a=rx libfla*
Are both the SAME THING.
Sorry friend

Sorry Sam, you caught me with not having proofread (enough) my tar stuff. What I MEANT to say was
$ tar xvzf *tar.gz
I mistakenly put "f" in twice when I meant to have "v" (for verbose).
Sorry for the "brain 'splosion"
Jon

i always type it as zxvf
because its an easy combo to remember on the keyboard if ever taught to type (wouldn't work on a de keyboard)
Install directory?

Thank-you for the info! Flash working with Firefox now, but I had to copy to this directory:
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins
I've only been using Mepis for a week, and it's been a revelation how easy it is to get the few things working that aren't set up automatically.
Using Mepis on a laptop, Acer Aspire 1362WLMi, IPN2220 wifi works fine (!) with ndiswrapper.

Setup is Easy

Had flash working with firefox for a while then for some reason, (a Mepis update?), it quit working.
Tried reinstalling Flash 9 using the installer from the Adobe site a couple of times. Nada.
Finally, copying "libflashplayer.so" to "/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins" did the trick.
Thanks for the pointer.
Ah, I almost forgot about

Ah, I almost forgot about Flash 9. I was on Gentoo back in December, and it was available via Portage (package manager), and I forgot all about it when I came back to Mepis. Now the question is, do I want to install manually, or stick with what's in the repository to keep things simple(yMepis)...

Thanks for the heads up! I just wrote an article on it on the MEPIS Knowledge Base. Here's a link http://kb.tafusion.org/link.php?id=149
It's a more detailed tutorial teaching users how to install it who have never used linux before
Credit goes out to you! Do you feel that it's accurate?
