A network question plaguing my mind...

Hey all,

I've been reading up on MEPIS in my local library for about a month now and I've finally decided to take the plunge. However, I have a couple of questions befor I switch, the first being the most importatnt:

1) Will MEPIS work with a NETGEAR DG834G v2 wireless router?
2) Can I run MEPIS permanently from a CD-ROM?
3) Is there a release of iTunes for MEPIS?

I thank you in advance for your help with these questions.

From this post it looks like

From this post it looks like your Netgear will work with MEPIS www.mepislovers.com/forums/index.php?topic=1864.0
As far as running from the CD, you can, but you will not be able to install or upgrade any software, so a lot of the multimedia stuff will not work.
As far as the iTunes go, yes there is software to support it, but you will need to do an install in order to use the software, both rhythmbox and banshee support iTunes.

Cheers dude, rumor has it that Microsoft are planning a mass crash of Windows XP in the next couple of years so I will probably do an install, I have no where near enough money to buy a new PC just yet.

Amarok comes preinstalled. It is the "itunes" of MEPIS. You can connect and manage your ipod using amarok.

Router and CD-ROM answer

ROUTER SUPPORT
NETGEAR DG834G v2 wireless router
Your router is TCP/IP compatable and uses remote management for configuring. This means that every operating system under the sun that supports TCP/IP can configure it. Since TCP/IP is the protocol of the internet almost EVERY computer OS is compatable with it.
All in all...YES, your router is compatable with Linux.

Running off of the CD
You can run off of the CD using a USB flash drive and the ONTHEGO login. Want to know how to do that?

Is there iTunes on MEPIS?
Yes, it's called Amarok. It comes preinstalled on MEPIS and is located in KStartMenu > Media > Amarok. It will also manage your ipod.

I also think that the Setting up MEPIS Linux section will be a big help for you.

And for ALL users I recommend reading my Quick-Start User Guide for MEPIS. It explains MEPIS easily for Windows users switching to Linux. It's in a compact 10 page format that is PACKED FULL of information that is valuable. Print it off and it will help you ALOT.

Hope this information is helpful,
SAM

Just a caveat: Some brands

Just a caveat: Some brands of routers (I won't mention which one I'm thinking about, but would love to pitch a certain black and blue box out the window) will handle all the appropriate protocols and ports, and do everything you would expect a router to do...except allow you to configure the darn thing via a "web-based" administration page set.

AFAIK, the NetGear router isn't one of those crippled units.

Aww!

Aww come on EnigmaOne, give us at least a few letters of the router name! You can leave one or two out Smiling
