Need help with apcupsd

I installed apcupsd 3.12.1 and followed through the apcupsd.com doc. This is installed on a mepis 6.0 os. The configuration that I have is a APC1500 with two computer powered. One connected by way of the APC serial cable. This pc is the netmaster, the other is set as ether, nis to the master.
I get an error message in the apcupsd.event file that says: Valid lock file for pid=xxxxx, but not ours pid=xxxxx. Next line says: apcupsd Fatal Error in device.c at line 68. Also listed is: apcserver annot bind port 3551: address already in use. I get these consistantly while running the apcupsd as root. I did the apctest (after stopping apcupsd as root) and I get this: unknow mode.type: 11. Fatal Error in device.c at line 68. Unalbe to create ups lock file.
Any ideas or thoughts? I have read over the docs several time and I must be missing something. Please someone point it out to me...

I am having the almost exactr same problem with apcupsd. I am running the Bakc-UPS XS1500 on a single computer and after installing apcupsd on Mepis 6.0, the daemon is never started by Mepis. I try a 'ps ax | grep apcups' after booting into Mepis and nothing shows ever.
It really looks like apcupsd is just broken on Mepis 6.0, unless someone else knows the answer to get it to work.
