Another Mepis Mag! ARGH!

Well, here we go again.

Linux Format has now issued a "Linux Format Special." You may be familiar with this (the last issue was a self-contained Ubuntu package).

For those not familiar with this, the Mepis package includes

1. Mepis on 3 CD's
2. Full magazine to get you started
3. Quick reference wall chart
4. Free tutorials

The price is $19.99 (printed in England)

Now just to make things jolly, I have to ask: What's the deal with 3 Mepis CD's? I thought we had figured out with all the magazine hoopla before that the 3-disk set was DVD while the single disk was the CD version of 6.0.

Sorry if I'm the only one in the dark on this. Also, I don't mean to start another magazine hunt.

I think the 3 CD idea is

I think the 3 CD idea is better then one DVD in a package like that because there are a lot of people out there who don't have a DVD drive in their computers, thus no one is going to be left out of the equation when purchasing the package.

Clarification

Oops. Now that I've had a night's sleep I realize we had the three CD's all along (not three DVD's). Gosh this is getting confusing.

Still, I'd almost pony up the $20 just to get the wall chart. Suitable for framing?

I WANT ONE!

Well Mark, I guess I'm going to have to wander to the bookstore again. My LXF subscription hasn't kicked in yet, so I get to pay the nice folks at the brick-and-mortar workplaces Smiling

I'm sure my wife will love the lovely Linux chart on the wall downstairs. It will go with everything! Smiling

Why buy?

Hey Jon,

Not sure anyone is hot for disks anymore. I'd spring for a set though--so long as something additional is made available. Did the 6.0 CD's you bought include the support disks? If so, why get the mag? (The wall chart would look great next to your Star Trek map of the universe?)

This Linux Format Mepis CD failed for me

I got this 3-CD distro about 10 days ago - the start-up failed after about 20 lines of code with a couple of red lines saying basically "you're f*****"

However, I persevered and obtained both Roblimo's book/CD from Amazon and also the official EasyMEPIS 6.0-2 CD from this site. Roblimo's CD went on fine, and worked well, but I overwrote it with the official CD, which is much tidier and cleaner in many areas. I've just bought a second PC which is going to be (already is) a dedicated Linux box - that's what I've surfed in today with... Dell Optiplex GX260 2ghzP4 512ram 20gb hdd. Nice good-value little box for Linux (£100). The sound even worked right out of the box - wow!

I just don't think Linux Format tested their CD on enough machines - that was money down the drain, and they will doubtless quote the small print at me if I ask for my money back.

Hey Malanrich;

Well, I bought this magazine as well and CD's were probably on stack at the publisher, and maybe some bit cheaper than DVD's?

So, did you have glitches? We're wondering if these disks might be some kind of "bad batch." It would be too bad, considering I like what Linux Format did with Mepis on the October issue DVD.

What I'd like to know is what you think of the inside of the package (the one they ship over here is sealed like a duck's sphincter (sorry Jon!)). Do the "magazine" and even the "chart" give new users usable guidance? Would this be a good thing to put in the hands of people we're trying to persuade to give Mepis a try? (Oldexplorer doesn't seem to think so...)

Too general...

Hey Malanrich;

Well I thought the info was too little on MEPIS, only a ten page info on install, the remainder of the hundred(!!!) pages was about Linux in general a few programs were discussed, but they might as well been on any other Distro!

So if you really want to, buy it. But be warned with this thought...

I would like to have seen some inner story from MEPIS history, the people that work there, etc.

I wouldn't have bought it if I knew its contents were this poor on MEPIS! Otherwise I think it's a great Magazin!

So maybe it's an idea to make a magazin for MEPIS itself, with DVD and to the point on "our" distro!

I do work at an advertising-office as a graphic designer and wouldn't mind to set it up. It would take me a month or so to do this, only thing needed is good content, a publisher, a printing-company, a DVD-provider, and the will to do such a thing...
