Connect TREO USB Modem
Posts: 14
Hi! there,
Newbie here,
I want to be able to use my Treo 700p as a USB modem can anyone help me?
I don't know anything about Linux and need a step by step help.
I am using EDVO connection.
Mobile Stream said to do this:
bash-2.05# pppd/dev/ttyacmo call ppp-script-treo
Setting up a PPP Connection
See the drivers/linux/mts folder for the complete pppd example scripts tuned up for the MTS GSM
operator.
1. Obtain the user name, password and dial number from your wireless provider. For GSM
networks the access point name (APN) is also required.
1. Copy either ppp-script-edge-template (for GSM GPRS/EDGE networks) or ppp-script-evdotemplate
(for CDMA 1xRTT or EvDO networks) file from the USB Modem distribution to
/etc/ppp/peers/ppp-script-treo (you may need to create the path manually), replacing the
USERNAME and APN (for GSM only) words with the correct values.
2. Add the user name and password line from the pap-secrets-template to the /etc/ppp/papsecrets
file, replacing the USERNAME and PASSWORD words with the correct values.
3. Test the connection.
Can anyone here help me with this , I have no ideal what all this mean.
I am sure there must be other Treo user that would love to get evdo working on Mepis Linux.
Thank you for you time.

Hi! Jon,
I am using Mepis 6.0
I don't have any other network connection, just the Treo.
I check the devices manager it does not show the dev/acmo
I am new to all this, so I don't know if I am looking at it right.
Also I can't get kpolit to sync either, the least of my problem.
There the web site the have the instruction, it at the bottom of the PDF document.

Thanks again for all your help.

Well James, thanks for the link. Unfortunately, when I went to open it, it killed my Firefox session
But I was able to bring it up using Opera
I took a quick look at it and have this question: Have you loaded any software from Palm onto your Mepis box?
I just did a quick listing of my OLD Mepis box, to see what /dev/ttyA* items are there. Open a konsole and enter the following command, and post the results (you do not need to be root). You should see something like the following:
$ ll /dev/ttyA* crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 0 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM0 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 1 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM1 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 10 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM10 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 11 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM11 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 12 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM12 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 13 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM13 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 14 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM14 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 15 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM15 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 2 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM2 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 3 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM3 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 4 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM4 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 5 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM5 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 6 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM6 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 7 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM7 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 8 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM8 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 166, 9 2002-07-13 22:55 /dev/ttyACM9
What do you get?

Jon,
I did not load any palm software.
I will get back to you when I get home on the other information.
To confirm, just open up konsole and type the string "$ ll /dev/ttyA*"
I do know that the USB ports work, because it do see the SD card.
Thank yu

Correction on Command

James, you're close on the command. However, some clarification. The "$" is just a prompt, you do not enter it. The next characters are two lower-case "L"s. Yes, the rest is correct /dev/ttyA* (all lower-case but the last "A" and a trailing asterisk (*). And, of course, no quotation marks
Let me know what you find out

jtborg, can you provide a link to where you got your instructions? I cannot help you directly because I don't have a 700p (but am thinking of buying one). But I think your instructions might be a little "off". By seeing the "real deal" perhaps we can help more.
Also, to take a step back. When you simply plug your Mepis box via USB into the 700p, what do you see on your Mepis box. Oh, I should also ask: Exactly which version of Mepis are you running, and do you have any other network connections (modem, broadband, etc., etc.) that work? If so, what are they? The reason I ask is we first need to determine if the 700p is even being detected by Mepis.
Let us know what you find.
