Is the MEPIS Desktop in Need of a Makeover?

emelbert's picture

From time to time, we hear from users who say that the look of the MEPIS desktop isn't on par with the quality of the MEPIS operating system. We tend to agree that the desktop could use a little makeover. The problem is that we just don't have the money to hire a professional to design a desktop, nor do we have the time to work on it ourselves. So this is a call to you graphic designers out there, and anybody else who would like to tackle the MEPIS desktop makeover. Please give us your comments and ideas, and also indicate whether you'd be interested in working on this project.

I like the contest shots

I like the contest shots from freespire very much. Lots look pro. The total look of adriantm gnome shot is also looking pro. EnigmaOne shots are also good looking. The rest i didn't like. ( sorry if i'm to straight ).
I think a logo needs to be small and not to big and in one of the corners. Like some of those freespire wallpaper contest shows.

But what icon pack you want with it and what deco wouldfit and what kickerbackground. All of those making it look pro. Change only one and it doesn't make much of a difference.

I'm with you on that Freespire-contest!

Hi Awakatanka;

I'm with you on that Freespire-contest! They are PRO!
I like them too, and would like to make some of that myself!

But I need to wait until next week,
for than I'll have my hands on a better 3D-program,
and than I can go on with some real "Arty-Farty" work... (pardon my French)
And I will! Eye-wink

Backgroundimages etcetera are in my range,
icons and kickerbackgrounds, are outside this range,
so we'll have to ask someone else for them!

This is what I need to make it better!
Give some of your ideas, what Freespire-wallpaper would you like me to use as a base to start from, for instance?
So, share your thoughts, Awakatanka or anyone else!

Ruuds Logo

after looking at almost all of linux distrobutions, i'd have to say that mepis does not need a lot to make it the best looking. i like Ruuds Logo and Ko's wallpaper. i agree that there may need to be more than one available, since some people like a simple clean look where others such as myself prefer a technical look. anyway.. goodjob Ruud and Ko.

some of this work is good,

some of this work is good, but i still dont think any of it matches up to the freespire stuff.

it should be easy to start a contest on deviant-art or somewhere else where freespire did it, we just need formal go-ahead. how to do it is a bit tricky.

say we put out a call for background and logo together on one image and one person gives us a great wall paper but lousy logo, or vice versa. i say we contact both people and ask them to switch. but i figure we wouldnt need to worry much, these people are serious and i think we'll love most of what we'll see. i think combined is better than separate logo/background competitions.

once we have the logo and background, i figure use a standard theme and we're done.

A wallpaper doesn't have to be to busy with grapichs. You will lose youre icons in the wallpaer then. You need to keep in simple for a good 1st impresion. The picks are a example. I would choose the nature one as my background.

If you want it keep it simple then this looking ok.

This is a good example how a logo can be intrigated in the wallpaper. If you want a logo standing out.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/37354316/

If you want to go nature way then this is also looking good. Only the logo is a bit to big in my opinion. And not totaly in same style with the rest.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/36899084/

But everyone has a diferent opinion and you have to choose some different styles to meet the needs abit. Als you have to fit the rest of the look to the background. The gnome look of adrianTM is a good example of that.

Thxs all that made examples i love the work you do for it. Even if its not my style.

edit.

Looking good...

Hi Awakatanka;

I think you're right about the three shown wallpapers.

They're looking good, I would need the 3D-program I wrote about, to make something similar!

The logo and the upside down V's (or are they supposed to look like upside down birds?)indeed are to big, as well as the socalled call for action:"The freedom of choice", I'm not into such a thing, that's why I left out the call for action in Mepis: "an OS for the 21st Century" for the most of my wallpapers...

But again, that's not up to me, what we all choose would be the result of what I or another creative would make!

First, I have to figure out this 3D-program, before I could start with your ideas and comments, so please be patient.

That's the whole point, everyone has it's his/her own point of view and wants/needs in an OS, including our SimplyMEPIS.

Hope to show you something "your style" within a week (or maybe more?!?)

This is what I was waiting to see; something 3D that jumps off the page. What applicaion are you using? This is a really good job. It is a bit too happy for me, but it is great. It looks like you are off to a good start on a graphics career for Mepis. Smiling
