Misaligned Resource Pointer

I have an older computer (Dell Optiplex CX110) which was working well with my Mepis OS 3.0. I recently installed Mepis version 6.0 The system had been working well for about 3 weeks. The system is still performing ok but I am getting a Misaligned Resource Pointer (d7862322 and d4c995a2) error during the boot. I am also getting an error message about the HDD : HDD no drive in disk. My hard drive seems to be functioning normailly. I am getting the following dmesg output:

Can anyone suggest how to address this.

Joe, "SET: Misaligned

Joe, "SET: Misaligned resource pointer" is a ACPI bug in the kernel you are using, you can try and upgrade your kernel or turn ACPI off at boot or ignore it. What do you want to do?

hdd is the is the slave drive on your secondary controller, what kind of drive is it?

WHEN Did It Start Messing Up?

joemanne wrote:

Joe, when exactly did it start messing up? I'm assuming that your system was working fine before the upgrade, but did it start messing up:
1) shortly after the upgrade to 6.0
2) a few weeks after the upgrade (but was fine for that period)

Had you verified the iso download to ensure that you got a complete image? Did you verify the CD burn to make sure the CD was good? When you did the install of 6.0, did you get any error messages that you recall? I have this suspicion (and I could be wrong) that the CD you used was incomplete or bad...

Any possibility that you can back up what you have and redo the install?

Jon

I've got "Misaligned resource pointers" too!

I've always got these messages with MEPIS 6.0, even with the newer 686 kernel, but they don't seem to cause any problems:

I've never seen such messages with any other distro I've tried, and never on any of my other PCs. (This one's a HP Vectra VL800 P4 1.5GHz.)

Curious! Puzzled

This seems to be a common issue

I see it fairly frequently as I install SM6 on a variety of machines. My guess is certain hardware manufacturers implement non-standard, or new hardware technologies and the kernel does not have the specific driver or drivers to fully support it.

For example, on an intel 945 Core Duo system I built a couple of months back, I saw somewhere around 8 seperate misaligned resource pointers and a few other anomalies as well, but the machine still worked surprisingly well.

When I purchased my laptop at the beginning of this year, I had stacks of faults because my nvidia graphics and Intel Mobile Chipset were too new, but at least I had SM3.4 running where 3.3 failed to finish the bootup. When SM6 arrived, most of my hardware worked flawlessly with only a few items having address issues, but I can live with that, although I'm waiting to see if an updated kernel, Intel Wireless module and nvidia will iron out the remainder of the issues.

Misaligned Resource Pointer

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who responded so promptly to my query. Secondly I would like to apologize in my delay in responding to you. I will try the two fixes you mentioned : upgrade the kernel or turn ACPA off at boot.

You asked about the hard drive. I know the output suggests that it is a slave on the secondary controller but on the motherboard it is plugged into IDE1 and the hard drive is connected to the master connection on the cable not the slave. I suppose I could check to see if there is a problem with the pin settings on the hard drive.

Thanks,

Joe

Firstly I want to thank Jon for his reply to my query. In answer to your question about chronology : after I installed 6.0 the system worked without any error messages for almost 5 weeks. The problem started just a couple of weeks ago. I had not many any changes to either hardware or software configuration.

You raised the question about the integrity of my installation disk. I believe it is o.k. I did not get any error messages during the install. I also checked it out on another machine. However your point is well taken. I will repeat the md sum ckeck and if necessary reinstall the system.

Thank you,

Joe

I wanted to thank Ringan and Mike for their input.
I will report my results will all the fixes which have been suggested.

This is an addendum to my repsonse to Jimmy's question. I have a Maxtor 20 GB drive Model B8FEA.
