ifconfig ath0 down
There's also a GUI for that, start mutilities and command the card from there.

what mode do i need to be in if i have 1 router as the access point?

it still say invalid argument...
do i even need to set an ap mode if i have 1 router 1 wireless card
No need to jump through all those hoops
The DWL-G630 should work perfectly using just the mutilities network settings within the gui. Only thing is, I hope you haven't changed the settings and configurations too much by playing with files and utilities to the extent they will get in the way of a smooth and simple configuration.

You can use <alt>F2 and then
You can use <alt>F2 and then type mutilities in the box, or you can find it in System Configuration under the KDE (looks like gears) menu on the taskbar.
