Mepis 6 Wont install on an extended partition

Hello [2006-11-10]:
I have a laptop on which I must keep an XP partition, a Recover partition, and the MFG's diagnostic partitions.
The result is that I have to make all my Linux partitions live inside an extended partition (70 GB)
This works OK for Fedora5 and Centos. They install no problem.
I run Disk Druid, and manually set things up.

But for Mepis6, (and Ubuntu 6.06) they refuse to install. Even after running QtParted
and formating the partition, and commit etc. Mepis says it cannot mount the partition and refuses to install.

Any ideas?

Check /boot/grub/menu.lst

I have MEPIS 6.0 installed on logical volumes within an extended partition.

One possibility is that you need to (boot from the Live CD and) edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change the "root command" for the MEPIS 6.0 entry. The MEPIS installer may have failed to correctly identify the drive and partition.

The command looks like "root (hd0,5)", but the drive/partition numbers will probably be different in your case.

Here's an article on how drives and partitions are designated for grub (look for "How GRUB designates drives and partitions"):
