[Solved] kppp shows connection at 115000 on 56k modem

My internal modem connects fine but speed shows 115000 on kppp but the modem is only 56k.
Since my phone line is not the greatest, I'd like to see what the actual speed is.
I remember, cannot now find, there is a consolde command to see the real speed.
Or perhaps there is a program.
Can someone help me with this please?

Line Speed Misnomer

The speed that you are seeing is a terminal-side serial port speed, 115,200 b/s being the fastest standard rate of exchange between the serial port UART and the computer itself.

It has no bearing on the transmission line speed (phone line) at all, outside of the fact that your terminal-side speed generally having to be as fast as, or faster than, the transmission medium speed.

I am not aware of a program that does what you want, and will search-up a bit to see if I can find one. In the meantime, what is wrong with going over to DSLReports.com (I believe it is) and using their online connection diagnostic utilities?

IIRC, they did have enough that was windoze independent to allow you to make a reasonable determination of your line speed, under various conditions.

Another way of making such a determination is to simply download a file of a known size, and do the math, subtracting about 1/8th to 1/7th of the result, for TCP overhead and handshaking, to come up with a workable number.

[ 0.8571428571 * [ FILE SIZE (in bits) / TIME TO DOWNLOAD (in seconds) ] ] = Working Download Speed

You can do the same thing to determine your effective upload speed, to get a number to work with for both sides of the channel. (You need the ability to do ftp uploads someplace to accomplish this.)

Do this at various times of the day and week, and average your 'non-flier' results to get a reasonable figure to work with; as traffic speeds vary wildly at times--particularly when the windoze population starts cranking out more spam or doing exploit hunting again.

I should have mentioned that when using the internal modem the "cnnected at" number is the same number I use when defining the kppp setup.
Right now I have it set at 460800 and that is what shows in "connected at".
Also, if I go back to the external nodem, and set kppp for 115200, the "connected at" typically shows up as 49000, but frequently dropping down as low as 21000.
I'll give your formula a try.

I just dropped into the http://www.dslreports.com website and, never having been there before, it took me a while to find their speed tests...which happened to be right in front of me, accessible from their "Tools" menu selection.

From what I see, it looks like they have a bunch of java applets that do the testing for you, but I didn't take it any further than realizing that the scripting is there, so I can't give you an opinion of how well they do in terms of accuracy.

Another Speed Test

Another place you can go for upload/download speed tests is SpeakEasy.net:

Very Fast Tacos

Yes, I have a pretty fast taco at the moment. But if the tacos are too fast, then it can be embarrassing Smiling

I just checked my speed connected to Cox and I get:
9809 Kbps Download (1226.1 KB/sec)
550 Kbps Upload (68.8 KB/sec)

I'm still considering switching to Speakeasy DSL, but If anyone cares to give me good/bad recommendations, I would appreciate it Smiling

I got the speakeasy to work.
About 10 minustes apart two reports ranged from 13 to 41 kbps.
My kppp using an extgernal modem shows with the higher one "connected at" 49333. (49kbos).
My interal modem when using that shows the false 115200.
I got into all this because the connection seems to be inconsistant and I thought the external modem may be dying so I got the linuxtant connection for the internal modem.

Thanks for your help.

Both are actually correct.

The first one is showing the communications speed on the phone line.

The second one is showing you the data rate between the computer chipset and the modem UART (basically the data transfer speed on the I/O bus), and not the speed of the phone line data transfer.

They are distinctly different but, potentially, simultaneous values.

If the modems are rated at the same data rate over the phone line (56K b/s), then the external modem will be superior to the linuxant-drivered modem.

Thank you for replying again.
I'm presently using the internal modem with the kppp options set to 460800, and this is what is showing:
Connected at: 460800
which I think is impossible for a 56k modem.
