HP officejet G85

Hello,

I have downloaded the MEPIS version 6 to try it out, and I usually follow a list of items to evaluate the distribution.

First item on the list is setup printer and print test page. It failed

It detects the printer but when it comes to printing, I get nothing.

This seems odd since the printer is supported. My other distribution prints just fine, which I haven't upgraded in about one year, so I don't think it is the version of the driver.

I didn't find any references to officejet g85 when I did a search, so I must be the only one using this printer or the only one having a problem.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,
JR.

I'm using a HP OfficeJet G55

I'm using a HP OfficeJet G55 all in one with Mepis. I can print and scan with no issues. I'm not at the computer so can't tell you exactly what I have installed but there are a couple things I think I had to d/l to get everything going. Go into synaptic and search for "hp". There is hpjis and hpoij? I can't remember exactly but, they are obvious when you do the search. After they were installed I could do everything include scanning in The Gimp.

Good luck

Chris

HP Printers have a "quirk"

HP Printers have a "quirk" with SimplyMEPIS 6.0 (and Ubuntu 6.06 for that matter) in that they show up more than once.

You can't use the localprint interface (use Kcontrol instead), and you have to select the Printer with the underscore characters in it (second main listing, usually under "other" instead of "usb").

When you get to the list of drivers for HP, select the G85 HPIJS driver (it's already in SimplyMEPIS 6.0)

See this post for details (it includes some screen prints). Just substitute your printer for the one being shown and it should work if you select the correct printer from the list on the first Add Printer Screen.

That did it.

Thanks Jim, that did it.

I will now install version 6 on my hard drive and continue with my tests for the next few months, before I decide whether to switch or not.
