MEPIS 6.0 lacking
Posts: 29
I have installed MEPIS 6.0 on a HP Pavillion P3 600 MHz. Let me say that I have used earlier versions of MEPIS with no problems and really thought MEPIS was the best distro but MEPIS 6.0 is a beast.
No sound, does not see the Riptide sound card (no drivers) Oh well I think, Linux just does not have drivers for all things.
No cdrom and cdrw, can not mount. I have Googled and tried just about everything to mount these drives with no luck. I have posted my problem on this forum but was removed (why? people were answering) because of old post.
K3b will not load ( most likely because it can't see cdrw drive), who knows?
MEPIS 6.0 no longer has MEPIS OS Center, a great tool, why was it removed?
Is it just this old HP or other people having problems with 6.0?
I have run MEPIS 3.3.1 in LiveCD mode on a HP notebook (zv5000)and on a box I built and all things work or atleast can be easily made to work. I did a HD install and things worked with earlier versions.
I have not run 6.0 on the notebook, afraid to try!!
Thanks,

I think install CD ok

.. but are you sure the install CD is OK??? Not seeing a CD rom drive sounds odd.Have you tried the same CD on different machines? Check ISO checksum and stuff like that?
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
I think the CD is OK. I run a md5 checksum before burning the iso and all was good. Install went flawless, easy, no error messages or alerts.
I can post the dmesg if it will help. It reports hdc and hdd errors but I don't understand what I need to do to correct them.
One thing I don't understand on other versions of Linux the cdrom was seen as sdc1 and sdd1 emulating SCSI. The cdrom and cdrw are seen as hdd and hdc with MEPIS 6.0.
Need a MEPIS guru to point me in the right direction.
Thanks,

sata / ide issue?
It could be that the CD drives are connected to a sata interface rather than ide.
Try this:
add to grub boot line: combined_mode=libata
in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, add this line: options libata atapi_enabled=1
see if that helps....

no SATA

Where do I find the grub bootline?
I'm sure they are not connected to SATA. This is a 6 or 7 year old box and I saw they are connected to ide when I added RAM.
I have booted my notebook with MEPIS 6.0 and all seems to be working great! It took a while to get the wireless connected but here I am. This is not ready for the average "joe" user. I belong to a couple of PC user groups and most of them could NEVER get this up and running and the user group members are more knowledgable than most users.
I'll edit the grub bootline as soon as I find it. I have just about decided that the old HP is just not compatiable with Linux. Well I don't give up too easy, so I'll be waiting for info on the grub bootline.
Thanks,
FXEF
don't bother
Posts: 2299
if the box is 7 years old, you won't have to try the bootline.
Sorry, I beg to disagree. MEPIS is a lot easier to install than Windows, if the hardware is compatible... In that case, all drivers are preloaded and the system is up and running in 30 minutes. Incompatible hardware is hardly an OS issue....

There's got to be a reason MEPIS does nor see these drives. I know they work because I used them to burn the iso and install MEPIS. They work under Win98. For some reason K3b setup will not load.
Here is the results of dmesg command, hopefully a true geek can understand it, way above my head.

sorry... but... have you tried checking the bios to see if it is set to use Plug 'n Ply OS? You should disable that setting. Also, try booting up with the cheat code 'irqpoll' (just start typing in the grub screen and it will be added to the bootline).

Check your /etc/fstab file

Check your /etc/fstab file it should look similar to this.
Go to the /media directory and make sure that there are folders for the names of your cd-rom and cdwriter.
Go to the /dev directory and hover your mouse pointer over the cd-rom and cdrw icons and see if there linked to the appropriate devices. If not then change the entry in fstab to use /dev/hdd or /dev/hdc.
/dev/hdc1 / ext3 defaults,noatime 1 1
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devmode=0666 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hdc3 /home ext3 defaults,noatime 1 2
# Dynamic entries below, identified by 'users' option
/dev/hdc2 swap swap sw,pri=1 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom iso9660,udf noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrw /media/cdrw iso9660,udf noauto,users,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy vfat,ext2 noauto,users,exec,rw 0 0
You may want to save this under a different name also as I cannot keep this configuration. That way all you have to do is replace fstab with this file after rebooting. If anyone knows how to keep this from changing please respond.
I know that cdroms, writers are supposed to auto mount but they don't in Mepis 6.0-1.

I googled around for that error you get, and got the impression it is kernel related. I did not come up with an answer, except trying to add acpi=off in the boot line (again, when grub is showing, type it right away and boot up like that).
Could you give us the exact specs of the machine? It must have either an exotic motherboard or other non standard components, since this is an infrequent error....
