UPDATE 2006-11-20

I think these are the main issues:

1. Some of you want Lite to be different, for example use xfce or offer only a very small core for initial installation. And some of you want Lite to run on even older and smaller hardware.

That would be a different product and not really Lite. It's unlikely I would ever have time to create an ultra-Lite.

2. Some of you can't run 6.0 due to hardware support issues.

That's not really a problem with Lite. That's a problem with 6.0 and with technology marching on. But I'll do what I can to improve the older hardware support in 6.0. I'm working on the kernel right now. I'll see if I can enable any options that might help.

3. Some of you run Lite, but you would like an updated version.

Lite is a balance of old core software that works with old hardware and the newest apps that will run on low powered hardware. It would be difficult to improve on the current mix of old and new.

Bottom line:

I don't see a simple way to satisfy your collective--and conflicting--desires. Please feel free to keep the discussion going and let me know if you can reach a consensus.

Hi Burdicda;

Yes, isn't it a pity the discussion silently went dead...
I believe all comment needed were made, so maybe we have to be patient and hope based on the latest Update from Warren, other new ideas come in, where Warren can start his revival of MepisLite on?!?

Finding consensus

From Warren's comment, it seems we need to find some degree of consensus about MepisLite. We've already covered lots of ground in the previous discussion; if that has created some gridlock for Warren at this point, I'm all for submerging some of my own desires in favor of the common good of getting a MepisLite into production.

As it stands, I'm grateful for whatever Warren can do about #2 on his list. I tended toward wanting something like his #1, but can let that go. I'm a little unclear on whether #3 means that the present MepisLite is as good as it's going to get (i.e., updating would wreck the compatibility with older systems). But if #3 is an option (by, say, updating KOffice rather than by trying to get Open Office into MepisLite), that would make me a very happy MepisLite user.

I hope others have ideas on how consensus can be found.

kubuntu base

that is kubuntu based, not actually a Mepis Lite version

It seems that the limiting

It seems that the limiting factor is whether a pc can run KDE or not - KDE (3.4.x) isn't designed for older machines and while it can be cut down (possibly) - that seems unrealistic, while on the other hand- tweaked kernel availabillity - say one for older hardware +=2000, a laptop tweaked one or whatever packaged on a 'server install' disk - with no default window/desktop manager installed - but the option to choose your preferred WM - not sure whether Warren is keen to get involved with maintaining other WM's in the repo or not - but simply removing KDE from the live/install disk can make the difference between booting or not for an older pc.

As ever - a poll seems a good idea to see what people think - ie scope of support - pc's up to 3 years old? 4? 5? or min system requirements - 128mb 200mhz cpu+ ??
KDE, other or no DE? One kernel or choice? Backporting driver support for wifi, tv cards etc?

Once these matters have been decided on - progress can begin - until then things may flounder.

an idea to help delineate HW inclusion

I'm a Linux humble noob. Just tried SimplyMEPIS and I love it!
I'm writing an OpenGL Machinima/game engine. I think the LiveCD/Install mechanism could be used to turn the PC into a dedicated game platform on boot as a configuration branch.
Then the irresistible SimplyMEPIS seductions would take over from there.

Linux first-timers could really be boosted by a slew of game titles which don't even ship an MS version.
It's the LiveCD that sucks all us faint-hearted in and from there, inevitable total ownage by Linux.

Would wide support for old/new hardware along these lines make LiteMEPIS gain too much weight?

Just running the idea up the flagpole to see if anyone salutes.

Check out antix

Hi zeroKnots,

Just to let you know: Lots of the discussion of LiteMepis has been put on hold since the appearance of anticapitalista's new version of a super lite mepis. So check out the threads on antix, here and over at mepislovers.
