Help getting HP printer 970Cxi to work

I went to K menu, and all and when the computer looks for the printer, the response I see only lists:
HP colorjet1500fpp2zjs
HP Laserjet1000 foo2zjs
HP laserjet1005 foo2zjs
HP laserjet 1020 foo2zjs
So why??? why not the HP970Cxi that is plugged in?
I am a new user, and not good with command line. Step by step instructions please. Thank you!

The printer is plugged into the back of my ScanMaker X6 scanner, which is attached to the parrel port on my mother board. would this effect the results? How ? and How to correct the problem?
Thanks every one!
super dad

A chained scanner often

A chained scanner often causes detection problems for the printer on the far side of it.

Disconnect the scanner, and connect the printer directly to the parallel port on the motherboard, then try the printer installation again.

NOTE: Your scanner may not be Linux compatible. (Just an FYI.)

my reply to scanner questions

Hello,
I am slowing learning my way around this web site, I greatly appreciate your patience!
about the chained scanner and printer,
The software for the scanner, I am attempting to load, however there are some issues. such as: I have loaded the software to a windows based system before. and now in my attempts to load the same software to linux, allot is different. the choices are not as clearly laid out for me to choose and so finding the software I want is difficult. also, when I click on some listed as exe. Linux tells me it is a "windows executable type" size 46.5kb.
My questions to you are: being that it says what i just mentioned above, is it OK, for me to double click on it and activate the install and not cause a crash or conflict that I can not easily correct?

2nd. question: Is there any way to have linux disply the software exe. programs in a format that is similar to microsoft's, and there by making it much easier for 'me' to load the correct ones?
Thanks for your help!

The .exe files are not

The .exe files are not usable under anything but windoze. You could try it, but it simply won't work.

There are windoze emulation environments, but they usually do not work to support input/output operations through port hardware like USB or parallel ports.

To your second question: There's really no point in making the attempt, as the .exes are virtually useless to you.

Again, your scanner simply may not be Linux compatible (this is the equipment manufacturer's fault), and you should be able to determine if it is at the SANE website, as they have a listing of compatible hardware.

It's much simpler than

It's much simpler than that.

The printer menus in KDE have two entries for HP printers. The one marked Hewlett-Packard only lists the 4 printers you cited. But 2 entries down is HP which lists all the others including the Deskjet 970c. The Deskjet 970cxi is the exact same printer in a slightly different package.

You'd be surprised how many people this little KDE idiosyncrasy has caught!

Also, the Microtek Scanmaker X6 does appear to supported by Sane. You shouldn't need to load any special software for it, you just need to select it in Kooka.

That said, I don't much like Kooka and usually scan from the Gimp which while not included anymore in Mepis is easily installed via Synaptic.

Have Fun!

Prgress Update on printer project

Printer is connected directly to computer parallel port #1.
installed th drivers computer found just as I was instructed to do.
Printer tested test page just fine.
I typed a document using office, and the printer will not print? no lights blink all is fine, and the printer's power light is on, and is green.
Now why will printer not print??
Super dad,
not feeling so super, right now.

Progress Update on Printer project

Hi Superdad,
You may have done this but in case you have not is printer set as default it could be when you use office it does not know what to print from in office look at file printer settings to see if it is. If not go to control centre look at peripherals, printer and highlight your printer click on instances and then click set as default. Then try office again.

Cheers John
