MEPIS 6.0.1 Live DVD -- Trouble with start-up, mounting, etc

Hello all,

To give some background, here is my set-up:

1) Windows XP Pro on master hdd in NTFS. FAT32 partion on same master hdd for data storage.
2) MEPIS 3.43 on slave hdd in ext3. Swap about 2 gigs. Ext3 partion on same slave hdd for data storage.
3) Grub is my dual boot method
4) 2.4 ghz pentium, 1 gig ram, 1 DVD (single layer) burner, 1 DVD reader
5) Dell 1907 FP LCD monitor
6) Nvida GeForce card, 128 mb

Today I decided to take the MEPIS 6.0.1 Live DVD for a spin. I did not install it. I simply used it as a Live DVD to test its basic features and layout.

First Issue:

The 1st time I booted from the disc, I got to a black screen with a message stating something about configuration (I assume for my screen). Unfortunately, it locked, so I manually restarted the PC. The 2nd time I booted from the disc, I got the same black screen and the same message, but MEPIS proceeded to load the login screen as it was supposed to do.

Does anyone know what could have caused the "goof" during the 1st attempt?

Second Issue:

When I login as "root" and want to mount any of my hdd partitions, the only way I can do it is via the little "KwikDisk" icon in the lower right screen. However, if I go into the actual "mnt" directory (1st -- click home icon in lower left, 2nd -- click "up" arrow to go up a directory level to arrive at / and then 3rd -- click on mnt) I see my folders for my various partions. However, they are empty when I open them.

Does anyone know what could explain this? Why can I mount them and see them with the KwikDisk method but not with the other method? Is that normal or is that a sign of a problem?

Third Issue:

Does anyone know what happened to those eight [8] little icons that used to be in the lower left screen (at least on MEPIS 3.43 that is where they were located)? There were icons for things like MEPIS OS center, System Guard, Kinfo, System Config, Console, Superuser file manager mode, etc. I looked around in the "K" menu and found most of those icons except for the MEPIS OS center.

Does anyone know where the MEPIS OS center went? Maybe I simply missed it while looking in the various menus. Regardless, I liked having it as an icon (along with the seven (7) other icons) in the lower left screen.

I welcome all thoughts, suggestions, etc.

Thanks!

1st issue could be a bad

1st issue could be a bad burn. You need to burn at the lowest speed that your burner will go. Did you boot from the burner or the reader?

2nd issue is that unless you mount the partitions with kdiskfree these files will always be empty as the dvd doesn't mount any hard drive partitions.

3rd issue those icons are gone and so is mepis os center. Instead click on System icon on taskbar> System Configuration. Expand System Administration then scroll down 7 items and you will find Mepis System tweaks and Mepis utilities.

I miss those icons also.

Could this also be a cause

wpfaff:

I read on another forum that the 1st issue could relate to my nVida card. I have always used the "normal" boot but someone suggested I try the "vesa" boot.

What do you (or anyone else reading this) think about that?

BTW. . .I read the Live DVD via my DVD burner. . .I did not try my DVD player. Is there any significant "read" difference between a burner and a simple player?

My 1st hdd is primary master and my 2nd hdd is primary slave. My DVD player is 2nd master and my DVD burner is 2nd slave.
