Kmail IMAP and spam detection
I've just become aware of a kmail problem in which the combination of spam detection and an IMAP account can result in kmail deleting your mail in the IMAP inbox.
There appears to be some smart idea in which the spam is detected and transferred to your local trash folder (which is a bandwidth problem) unless you set it differently. However it downloads and uploads mail endlessly and for uncertain reasons deletes mail in your inbox.
Kmail in cvs has apparently got this fixed, but it hasn't filtered through to major packaging systems.
If you use Kmail and have an IMAP account and have spam checking enabled I suggest that you do not allow kmail to check your IMAP mail automatically.

Thanks
Thanks for the heads up Liz!
I do not currently use imap for any of of my email accounts (yet).
One of the reasons I started to use KMail was to learn how easy/difficult it is to set up/use the spam and anti-virus tools. The ONE TIME that I ran clamav on my system, when I was using Thunderbird, I found one bad thing with Thunderbird and other email clients that use "mbox" file structures. That is, if a virus id detected in one message, the entire mbox gets quarantined. This was discovered when clamav passed through my old, old (1999 email files and found two viruses that I had been carrying around in my archives! I was able to delete them and have found nothing since
But the advantage of the KMail "maildir" structure (for those who are listening) is that individual email messages and enclosures can be isolated.
In a nutshell, I hope to learn more about these things by using them (grin).
Thanks again Liz, I shall keep my ears open for any gnus.
Jon
