I love mepis

Hi, guys:

I love mepis v6, really it is the most convenient and powerful distribution I have ever used: so easy to install, use, configure and so many powerful application integrated in the base system.

I have used linux for some time, the most powerful facility of linux I think is the comand line interface, it is powerfull and flexibility, and it costs much less system resouce than the GUI, but some time I will surf the internet, read some documents, so GUI is also needed

I have used redhat, fedora, suse, ubuntoo, gentoo and debian.

redhat: it is out of maintanence, so you can't use the most latest version software.
fedora: it is a huge animal, kernel 2.6 based, can't not be installed on my home pc (a out of date machine: PIII450, 256M, 80GB HDD)
suse: it is a huge animal, kernel 2.6 based, can't not be installed on my home pc.
ubuntu: I can run the livecd on my home PC, but can't not be installed on it.
getoo: it is a huge animal, kernel 2.6 based, can't not be installed on my home pc
debian r3.1: kernel 2.4 based, can be installed on my home PC ( but it spent me about 4 hours including the GUI), the most inconvenience is that after
the installation, the runlevel is 2, so you need edit inittab and install the GUI

Mepis is the most excellent linux distribution I have ever used!!! The most important fact is that it runs smoothly on my home PC( a out of date machine: PIII450, 256M, 80GB HDD). I have tried to install the fedora, gentoo and ubuntu on it, but all failed; but after I installed the mepis 6.0 , I was so surprised: it is so great a distribution, it rocks even on such an out of date machine.

thank you all the guys: you are so dedicated to develop such a wonderful linux distribution

MepisLite for your older system?

Glad to hear Mepis is doing the job that other distributions are not up to. If Mepis 6.0 is running fine, then enjoy. But some like to use a windows manager like Xfce for peppier performance. Or if you want to try a slimmer version of Mepis, consider MepisLite (now dated, though I run it on two boxes). Those of us with older systems are looking forward to a new version of MepisLite. Stay tuned...

RE: Mepis for your older system?

I had installed debian once upon a time on my older system, the window manage is XFCE

This time with my mepis the window manager is KDE, it runs smooth and rather effiently, Smiling it is very nice, thanx again to the guys of MEPIS, I am really facinated by its performance on such an old system like mine!!!

BTW, can you give me some information about how to swith the window manager on linux, thanx a lot

Switching WM

If you use synaptic to install a window manager, you will find it listed in the drop-down menu of the log-in screen. And you can configure an automatic log-in so that Mepis will bypass the log-in screen and boot directly into whatever window manager you select.

Keep in mind that some window managers come very minimalist and require configuration. If you install everything related to Xfce from synaptic, you'll have a nice group of basic applications. But some of the other WM's need more setting up. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
