Motorola 56M Chipset and Mepis?

I think I've been "had".
I went looking for a modem that works in a PC I'm trying to get working with SimplyMEPIS for a friend, and I found a listing on Ebay that said a modem was Linux compatible.
Further research (checking the manufacturer's web site, etc.), seems to indicated that this is a "soft modem" using a Motorola chipset, and Motorola has only released binary drivers for a handful of distros (some Mandrake releases, and Suse 9). I downloaded the userguide, which makes no mention of Linux at all (even though the manufacturer's site also shows Linux compatibility). Ditto for the drivers (no Linux driver in the manufacturer's download).
Is there any chance that this modem is going to work, or would I be better off just refusing the package and hoping for a refund. I've already spoken to the vendor about it, and they said they'd refund my money if I refused the shipment:
This is the modem in question (shipped before they could stop it from going out):

I've got a feeling that I should have researched it better to begin with. I just ordered a sound card for this same PC from newegg (CMI8738 chipset). I could have ordered a US Robotics modem at the same time for about $10 and saved on shipping total versus having to order it separately. Grrrrrrr
