mepis 56k pcmcia modem

After having lots of frustrations with linux dialup modems I went back to mepis after having bought a 3com 3cxm756 pc modem on ebay for $4.00. It had an xjack connection which made it a lot easier to use. As
soon as I put it in and went to kppp, using modem query, and it found it immediately. After that it was a cinch to enter the numbers, etc, and hookup. I put this on a compaq presario 2100 laptop running a 40gb hard drive with winxp on the first 20gigs and debian/mepis (2.6.12-1) on the second half. I tried to get dialups to work for: knoppix, kate, ubuntu basic, slax, frenzy, pclos and Q1. These are great distros which mostly connected immediately with pc wifi modems (I have netgear and two orinocos) but no luck with analogs. I heartily recommend getting this modem which I got at ... epcsales.. on ebay. Good connecting!
