MEPIS Birthday Surprise: SimplyMEPIS 8.5 alpha Release

Morgantown, WV, Nov 22, 2009 -- November 21 was the seventh anniversary of MEPIS Linux, so it seems fitting that Warren Woodford has uploaded SimplyMEPIS 8.4.80, the alpha release of MEPIS 8.5. Available from MEPIS and public mirrors, the ISO files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.80-a0_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.80-a0_64.iso.

Warren Woodford explained the rationale behind the 8.5 release: "MEPIS is based on Debian Stable source which is extremely reliable and well supported by the Debian community. Debian makes a stable release approximately every two years, but MEPIS users are always anxious for the latest software. So when we deem it safe to do so, we cautiously update application software using newer sources. In this way, we keep the release relevant and interesting for a longer time."

Warren continued: "In this case, a lot of users have asked that we support the KDE 4.3 desktop, yet other users have asked that we continue to support KDE 3.5.10. So in the spirit of our ongoing updates, we are building 8.5, not as a replacement for 8.0, but rather as an alternative for those users who want KDE 4.3. We will continue to support 8.0 with KDE 3.5.10 in parallel with 8.5 and KDE 4.3."

The 8.5 alpha defaults to a 2.6.32.rc8 kernel which is also available to 8.0 users as an optional install. It also includes KDE 4.3.2 and QT 4.5.3. Other packages were updated beyond the 8.0 base, only if necessary for compaibility with KDE 4.

Woodford cautions: "This is a first alpha release, even the kernel is still in development. Between now and the final release of 8.5, there may be unexpected changes or goofs that will break your installation. Please use this alpha only for testing and experimenting. We try to be careful with everything we do, but as usual with community releases, there is no warranty of any kind."
