SimplyMEPIS-64 6.04 beta1

Hello,
Posting this from the livecd Mepis-64 6.04 beta1.
The beta1 is available to Subscribers on the Mepis ftp-server.
Just like in Mepis-32 there is a flaw in Mepis-64 that keeps from setting the correct resolution from the CD. Warren stated this earlier to me in an email communication:
"There's a bug in the Betas that affects booting from CD. The maximum vertical resolution for xorg.conf is preset to 65 hz and it should be 70 hz. The vertical frequency is the primary limiting factor for the maximum resolution that can be attempted with a particular chip and monitor. If you can boot graphical from CD, the fast fix would be to use mxconfig to change the frequency, then ctrl-alt-bksp to restart x on the fly. Please help out anyone who's having a problem with this. This will be corrected in the next releases."
Yes, it works. Of course.....

Great to hear about the new development. I will test the 64 bit version as soon as I return home to my dear AMD64

SimplyMEPIS 64 bit beta does indeed seem excellent at a first test.
There is an error however in partimage. It fails to load with an error message that it was compiled with an incompatible version of gcc.
Otherwise, everything seems first-rate, and the garphics are very tasteful.

Thanks, I still don't see it in testing directory, I was wondering if Warren removed it because of that display bug.

In gftp I still see the .iso, of course after logging on to the subscriber ftp-server. Right next to the mepis-32-beta1.
Or are you looking elsewhere.......?

By subscriber ftp you mean ftp.mepis.org? I don't see it... I see MEPISLite and md5 for it, README, SimplyMEPIS-32 and md5 for it, only 5 files.

You are right. The 64bit beta1 is gone. I simply forgot to refresh earlier.........
You're probably right that Warren pulled it off to replace it with a 'corrected' version (resolution, display-mode not supported problem).

Since the Mepis64 beta1 is now back again on the fpt-server for subscribers I started the download some minutes ago. I assume that it is a corrected version (it has the same designation/name and even the date-stamp is from Dec. 29).

I think the md5-checksum IS different, but I cannot check it as I overwrote the previous one.
Don't start to download all at once......

I am downloading ftp://ftp.mepis.com/testing/SimplyMEPIS-CD_6.0-4-beta1_amd64.* as I write this.
I now know that ftp.mepis.com is NOT the same as ftp.mepis.org. I had previously assumed that they were different links to the same server location. They do accept the same keys.
The file date is approximately the same as Warren's announcement.

Ah, you are right, thanks. I

setting resolution

I don't quite understand this. I'd like to set up the display to 1280x1024 @ 75Hz, which is what everything else is set for.
As is, Mepis has the display shifted left by about 0.75 inches and some things are not visible. I tried mxconfig, but it doesn't have my monitor, an Optiquest Q7 LCD.
Is there a config file I can edit or something like that?
Thanks!
Andy

Not an corrected Mepis64 ,iso....!!

I can now confirm that the Mepis64 .iso which is now (30.12) on the Mepis-ftp-server is the SAME .iso as the original one posted there yesterday. The resolution problem has not been corrected. Btw: the md5sum reported in the file and the actual md5sum are different...
My guess is that somehow the original .iso file got corrupted on the server and was replaced today with an identical copy. I may be wrong about it though....
I'll wait for the RC or the release - when they are there, after being properly announced.
Nevertheless it's a good beta1......

Andy, as a fix you need to run mxconfig as root. Then change the max. value (under Monitor) for Vertical Frequency from the 65 to 70. Logout + login (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) and you are in business.
The black column (shift) to the left (at least here) is gone as soon as you install nvidia-glx (for newer nvidia cards).

Ko Bros, thanks for the info! I didn't realize I could modify the max vertical freq, I thought I had to find something that had the same limits as my Optiquest.
Anyway, I made the changes and it works fine.

Installed Mepis-64 6.04 beta1 to harddisk.
This feels real snappy and fast on my AMD64 system. Excellent work Warren. I have tried Kubuntu64, but this beats Kubuntu in all respects.
Take a day off Warren...... You earned it. Take two.
