Mepis 6.04 beta 1 and Wifi Problems

I have installed the new beta1 (preserving my home partition). I now been unable to access the web using my Wifi connection. I have entered the ESSID and (128bit) wep key into both the mepis utils--> manual config and used the automatic config of KNetwork manager (rebooting in between each time) without any luck. My wired connection works ok but I am now obviously tied to my spare room.

Two things I've noticed about KNetwork manager is the options to enter WEP codes are as Passphrase (i'm assuming a 128bit hex is not this) and also as 104/64 bit hex which I am also assuming is not correct. Does KNetwork manager even support 128bit WEP?

I did notice that during boot if you press Esc you can see the error message ipw220 has a strict shutdown method, please update!!!! I think ipw220 is the Wifi driver isn't it?

ipw2200

KNetworkManager doesn't always work
Use Mepis Utilities -- on the beta it can be found at MepisNetworkTweaks or MepisNetwork
It's best to turn off encryption first, get your connection working, and then turn it back on.
128-bit WEP is supported. Some folks have reported problems with wireless in the beta.
ipw2200 is the wireless driver if you have Intel Pro 2200 Wireless -- Post back with make and model if you have a laptop, or Vendor, model #, and exact version if you have a plug-in card.

Use the wiki -- http://www.mepis/docs -- in there instructions for Mepis Utilities will mention mutilities, but it is changed to mnetwork or mnetworktweaks in the beta.

& on Macbook

I found that connections drop out on the Atheros of my week-1 Macbook; signal strength is weaker than in Mac OS X.
I had myself observed that the MEPIS wi-fi manager works better than KDE's.
I've blogged about MEPIS several times recently and hope MEPIS can make the Macbook a useful PC.
I appreciate that GRUB is well-behavedly placed in the BootCamp partition. If a good Beryl can be got going, I'll be sold!
(But, I wish you'd get the ver 6.0.4 betas on some more and speedier servers!)

3 1/2 hr. later addendum: I'm writing this from within beta 2 via the live cd. I had to use VESA mode to boot and then, again, had to do lots of clicking around so as to get wi-fi connected. I think the connection strength may be better; but, I just now loaded Gmail, then normally oh-so-slow Yahoo mail, and both seemed as fast as I've ever experienced. And, just now I thought of forums.mozillazine.org and that blasted in!
So I may install beta 2 atop beta 1 tomorrow!

Try first without WEP. Then

Try first without WEP. Then once you connect that way, try using WEP.

In the Mepis Network Utility, click the Wireless tab and notice which interface it is on (mine says eth1). Then go to the Interfaces tab and configure BOTH eth1 and your wireless (wlan0 ?) manually. That did it for me on Gateway m320 and my desktop too. Good luck.
