Is there any way to make the taskbar any narrower top-to-bottom? Or make it autohide?

right click on an empty bit of taskbar
or at one of the little arrow handles
choose
panel menu > configure panel

Ever tried a transparent panel?

Right click empty portion of the panel > Configure panel > click on Appearance, then look for the Enable Transparency checkbox.
It's a really cool effect and gets it to look like it's out of the way while still having access to all of the buttons

To make the taskbar disappear, there are two things you can do.
1) Right-click on blank part of taskbar and choose Configure Panel -> Hiding -> Hide Mode section. Choose either "Only hide when a panel-hiding button is clicked" (default), "Hide automatically", or "Allow other windows to cover the panel".
2) Under Panel-Hiding Buttons section choose Left and/or Right panel-hiding buttons.
To resize the panel, right-click on blank part of taskbar and choose Configure Panel -> Arrangement -> Length section. Set to something smaller than 100%
Apply any changes.
