Can't mount CD's

I have two drives, a BTC combo CDRW/DVD-ROM and and ASUS DVD/RW. If I put a CD in the first drive and click on the CD/DVD icon, it just tells me it can't be mounted. If I try in the second drive, I get the following error message:

Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
missing codepage or other error

Obviously, programs like Kaffeine or KScd can't find it either. Any ideas for a fix?

try this

right click the desktop
configure desktop
behaviour
device icons
mark unmounted dvd / cd / cdrw and the mounted counterparts
Apply
insert DVD: icon should appear on the desktop

You can delete the icon that is placed on the desktop after installation. I think it is a residue of the install

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

If it's audio CD you can't

If it's audio CD you can't mount it, you are not supposed to. It's probably a matter of configuration in KsCD to make it work.

tried that

Okay, thanks, the icon shows up. Unfortunately, I can't play audio cd's in any app. And I've got all the same libs installed as in 6.01.

alsamixer

open a console and type 'alsamixer'. Chances are your CD player has its own channel and low volume.

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

it's all a bit crazy

If I put an audio CD in the BTC combo drive, I get an icon, can browse the contents in Konqueror, but can't play it.
If I put it in the Asus DVD/Rw drive, I get no icon, can't browse it in Konqueror, but it does play in Kaffeine and Amarok.
I definitely don't know enough about Linux to figure this one out.

Try this: Start KsCD ->

Try this:

Start KsCD -> Extras -> Configure KsCD -> Use direct digital playback.

I see what you mean. I think we may have found a bit of a bug here. But then again, it is beta1...

Adrian, I tried your suggestion but it didn't help. Thanks anyway, though.

I forgot to mention, in KsCD

I forgot to mention, in KsCD config make sure it's listed the device that you want to play with /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom1 (in your case it might be /dev/cdrom1 )

It's fixed by upgrades!

The new mepis-utilities-6.0 and/or mepis-system-6.0 has completely resolved the problems. Both drives can now display an icon for a CD, let me browse it, play it, or rip it.

Great work guys!!

Edit: Well, I spoke too soon. The first combo drive, /dev/hda/ does work just fine. The second Asus DVD/RW drive just worked once, now when audio CD inserted an icon just "blips" for a split-second on the screen. Then the only app that can use it is Kaffeine, but only if I feed it the mount point of /dev/dvdrw/ when prompted by Kaffeine, which can't find it on its own. Oh well, at least some progress...
