...the Mepis CD I got with my Book...
You may want to try a newer version of SimplyMEPIS to see if it works with your hardware OK.
SimplyMEPIS 6.0 Final is the last officially released vresion and you'll find it in the released folder on most sites mirroring MEPIS.
SimplyMEPIS 6.0-4 Beta 2 is the latest beta (and there is also a 64 bit version of the newer update that's on beta 1 right now). These will be in the testing directories in most mirrors offering MEPIS. Here is a page with links to sites you can download them from:
http://www.mepis.org/node/1462
After downloading the .iso file for the version you want to try, you'll need to burn it to CD and boot from it (just like you do with the version you got from the book).
If you use SimplyMEPIS to burn the CD, you can use K3B (under the Multimedia menu) to burn the ISO.
If you use Windows to burn the CD, you can use something like Deepburner (make sure to use the burn iso menu choice when it starts). You'll see a link to download the free version of Deepburner in the middle of this page (second download button is the free desktop version):

If your network adapter is not being seen, that's not a good sign unless it's wireless.
The newer your version of MEPIS, the more likely your hardware will be supported.
But, you may find this page of use for your Network card:
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Ethernet
You may find this page of help for your Sound issues:
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Sound_not_working
You may just have a configuration issue.
But, your problems may be because drivers for your hardware are not in the distro version you're using. That can complicate things... IOW, you may have to try and find out if drivers are available for your hardware (and compile them from source if they're not available in binary format).
There are some commands you can issue to help determine what you actually have if the above pages on configuration don't help any.
For example, this one will tell you what pci interfaces are seen in the system (open Konsole and just type the command)
lspci
This one will tell you what drivers are available and being used:
lsmod
So, you may want to see if the configuration pages above help first. Then, if you want to pursue it further, post the results of those commands as a starting point for getting more help determine if you have driver issues or not.
If you can't download a newer version of SimplyMEPIS, you may also want to consider ordering a DVD or CD set from the MEPIS store. There's no guarantee that your hardware is going to work with a newer version either (but, it would be more likely to work with newer versions). For example, I've seen sound cards and wireless cards that work with SimplyMEPIS 6.0 that didn't work with earlier versions.

Have You RUN The Live CD?
Computerfreek, have you tried running the Mepis Live CD on your computer? One of the nice things about the modern "Live CD" versions of Linux, Like Mepis, Knoppix, PCLinuxOS, etc., is that it gives you the opportunity to "try before you buy". And it doesn't install anything on your computer. Mepis, like Knoppix and others, is very good at "hardware detection". Just put the CD in the drive and boot it (from power off). If you get good video, sound, and network connection then you're golden! On the other hand, if you have problems with some thing, then you can search the forum, or post the problem. If you provide enough information on what you have tried, we can usually help you get the problem fixed.
Give us more specifics on your hardware and the version of Mepis that you're using and we'll help you along
