Upgrade to Mepis 6.04
Posts: 75
I have a simple question. Will I be able to upgrade from Mepis 6.0 to 6.04 using Synaptic or from CD? I only have one partition for Mepis. I have not put my home on a separate partition. Maybe next time I have to install Mepis I will.

I'd backup everything to be safer.
I upgraded a friend's PC from a recently installed 6.0 Final to 6.0-4 Beta 1, and used the keep home directory option when installing the beta (using the install option from a Live CD).
Perhaps I don't understand how it's supposed to work. But, it appeared to lose everything I had stored in his home directory and on his desktop (or it placed it somewhere else that I didn't know where to look for it at after upgrading).
So, I'd suggest backing up anything important before trying it that way.

You can do it through Synaptic

Add the following 2 lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list, save and close then open Synaptic, hit the reload button and only after the package cache has been updated, click the mark all upgrades button. You may have to unselect the standard repository, maybe somebody can correct me on this or confirm it, one way or another.

If you want to get an eyeball on what is going to be updated first, click the Status button (bottom left section of synaptic screen)
If I recall correctly, not all packages will be marked the first time, this is OK. After the first lot have updated, go back and mark all upgrades again, or if you are using the status view, you can click on the Upgradeable category and mark each one in turn for upgrade, but I think all you'll need to do is to mark the mepis-install-6.0 for upgrading or installation and the rest will be done for you.
Personally, I'd wait as long as I could and try to get the next full release instead of upgrading to a beta, but ultimately, the choice is yours and remember to backup all important data before you change anything.
I am currently using the beta and it appears to be stable enough with the 686-27 (non-standard) kernel, no crashes to report, same package idiosyncrasies as the previous version.

I was more interested in when the 6.04 was finally released. I've never installed any betas. I only run them from Live CD.
Thanks for everyone's replies.

Careful! if you upgrade anything that is not from 6.0-4+0.9x things will break - like the latest alsa packages:

I've been using the Beta since Beta 1. All as been working great and I have been upgrading from Synaptic and now my login screen is all the way to Beta4 but...
There are a few differences in the "true" Beta4 and the upgraded Beta1 to Beta4. Most notably is under "System" -> "MEPIS". On the beta4 live CD there are about 4 things to choose from on the upgraded there is only "MEPIS Network Assistant". Why are not all the "Assistants" upgrading through the upgrades?
Thanks for any help...

You also need to look in the "new in repository" section for mepis as some packages have been renamed and will not show in the upgrade section. I do a general search for mepis changing the the scope to "Maintainer"

I did an upgrade during the Beta 2 stage. I am now at Beta 4. All of my assistants have shown up. I did notice that I had to reboot my machine after a couple of upgrades before I was able to upgrade some additional packages. I love the fact I can go to System Settings through the K menu and find all 4 assistants in one place without having to go through kcontrol to find them!
This is definitely looking like the best Mepis ever!
