New Kernel, No USB Flash automount

Howdy all

I have just compiled the 2.6.19.1 kernel source from kernel.org, however I am having problems with USB devices not being recognised.

If I bootup with my USB flash drive plugged in, I can see it in the media manager, and read/write to it.
However, once I have safely removed it, it is not detected when plugged back in.
On booting with it plugged in, I get no error messages during boot, however, if I boot without it, I get a message from uevent, complaining about no buffer space available.

CD's still pop up the window asking me what I want to do with the media, but no USB Sad

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Do I need to apply any patches to the kernel before I compile it?

I followed the guide on here about compiling a new kernel to the letter.
Any help is much appreciated Smiling

USB not working in MEPIS 6.5

I don't think its a problem with the way you upgraded the kernel. I have a bog standard MEPIS 6.5 32 bit system that won't register any USB device that isn't plugged in at the time of booting. And can't work out how to get this fixed.

yet when I had MEPIS 6.0 I plug in the USB and the system recognises it, and away it goes. I think someone left a routine out to do with auto recognition and mounting of USB devices.

No USB in 6.5? That is

No USB in 6.5? That is strange. Makes me suspect something went wrong with the install or whatever. Have you checked in Konqueror if it is in the storage media list? In that case it might just be a matter of activating the desktop icons.

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

Lack of auto detect of USB post boot up

G'day,

not sure about checking what in conqueror, but in /media there is a large list of usb device usb0 to usb7 and they show no contents and no choice to mount either.

The USB works if the device is plugged into the system at the time of boot up, but it doesn't find any USB item plugged in after boot up. I suspect the detection process is faulty.

Also, 6.5 will find video CDs and DVDs but doesn't detect music CDs unless in the drive at boot up. Again not ability to mount the drive either. If I use Kwikdisk to mount the music CD drive, I get an error message about the drive having a 'wrong fs type'. but put a movie in the same drive and away she goes.

BTW I checked the /etc/fstab entry for 6.5 and compared it to 6.0, except for the boot device info, they're the same.

now if I only knew what files are used to do the auto detect and auto run functions, and activate them, I could chase them down and look at them to. I still have the old 6.0 system on the old IDE drive plugged in, just boot from the sata now. Can change the boot drive and go back to 6.0 at any time. So I can easily compare file contents.

audio CDs cannot be mounted,

audio CDs cannot be mounted, since they are not data CDs.

USB devices ought to have their icon on the desktop once plugged in. In Konqueror you should see the devices under storage media (activate services menu form left hand vertical panel)

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

But that's exactly my point with the USB and the Audio CD

In MEPIS 6, plug a USB device or an audio CD in and an icon appears on the desktop, click on it an the appropriate program opens. With MEPIS 6.5 I put a USB device in or an audio CD in and nothing happens. Check in Konqueror under /media there are folders there but nothing in them and the don't mount. Using the Services tab in Konqueror and looking into Storage Media the USB devices don't show at all - the system doesn't recognise their existence. If the device is plugged in at boot up, then it shows on the desktop and in Storage Media, and the same with the audio CDs.

I've only seen this behaviour (or should that be non-behaviour) in MEPIS 6.5, not 6.0 or before.

At present, if I'm in MEPIS 6.5 and want to play a music CD or use a USB, I have to put them in and restart the system. If I have the system booted into MEPIS 6.0 I just put the disc or device in and the system finds it.

I suspect some pointer or file is not activating the auto search or auto discovery function for these devices.

I suspect something went

I suspect something went wrong with your installation. USB devices are supposed to give an icon on the desktop and be hotpluggable.

Desktop icons for CDs can be enabled by right clicking desktop > configuration > behaviour > device icons and activate the CD icons.

Cold you try if USB works OK with:
- live CD
- logged in as root?

I have not seen issues on the forum of users who could not mount USB drives, so it must be something specific in your installation or user account...

Intriguing results

Activating the icons made no difference at all

Logged in as root, same problems with USB and Audio discs as the general user.

Booted to the live CD as root and it would find a USB drive when plugged in but still wouldn't find and play an audio CD.

I'm going to try another installation on a different partition on the same disc, and see what happens. I'll let you know how it goes.

I had the same issue with

I had the same issue with USB drives not being recognised. I added the following line to fstab

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults,devmode=0666 0 0

before the dynamic entries section

Now it works as intended. This would seem to indicate a fault in the uDev implementation.

A few answers at once

G'day,

/etc/fstab already has an entry like

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults,devmode=0666 0 0

the only difference is the word 'defaults' entered it, no change. I tried a rebuild with MEPIS 6.5 32 bit no change, MEPIS 6.5 64 bit, no change regarding the USB.

When I first posted to this thread I was using MEPIS 6.5 32 bit on a 64 bit system as I couldn't get WINE and a few other programs to run on the 64 bit version. So I went back to 32 bit to get them working, but ran into some issues.

Now that I'm back at the 64 bit version of 6.5, when I put an Audio CD in it appears on the desktop and Amarok opens asking if I want to play the CD. Didn't happen with the 32 bit version on the 64 bit system - why is beyond me.

Current situation, still no USB recognition unless plugged in at boot up, and the Audio CD works as they should.

Now for some real weirdness

G'day,

Since I posted the above, I've been playing some music on my system while resetting all the settings. I had a weird thing happen and tried various things to duplicate it, and I did.

I have the desktop set to show all mounted and unmounted removable media.

Plug in USB thumb drive (512MB or 1GB makes no difference) at boot up, systems finds it. Boot up and plug in system doesn't find it. Insert an Audio CD and play it with Amarok, system finds and plays OK. Plug in thumb drive with only data, system doesn't find it.

Now for the weird bit. Take thumb drive to another machine, add one sound file. Take back to my machine and plug in, Amarok finds it and asks if I want to open it with Amarok. Say no, and it appears on the desktop as unmounted removable media, right click, select mount, and Konqueror opens with access to the drive.

As I said, real weird, but I can new see my thumb drives. I just have to have one music file on each at all times. Arrrgh, arrrgh.

USB automount not working after kernel upgrade

Hello everyone,

I upgraded my kernel compiling it by myself and packaging with make-kpkg. Together with the kernel I made new packages for alsa, fuse and ndiswapper.
After this upgrade the icon 'removable media' doesn't show on the desktop (kde) anymore when I plug my usb drive. I can mount the device manually typing mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 but I find this uncomfortable.
When I boot the old kernel my drive gets autodetected and I can use it normally.

Any help would be appreciated

USB automount not working after kernel upgrade

I have the same problem after kernel update...

I was tried lot's of kernel version from 2.6.15-27 to 2.6.22.1 , but the problem still...

I've patched the kernel with suspend2 and evms, and after booting with the new kernel i've installed the fuse, ndiswrapper, nvidia and ipw3945 modules.

When i booting with the original kernel, it works perfectly...

Maybe the original Mepis kernel uses a special patch for this? If is, then can anybody saying, where can i find them?

The aboves i've maded on a HP dv9000 notebook with Core2..

Thanks in advance.

For the record, I have the

For the record, I have the same issue with a custom kernel (2.6.22.11). Original kernel works OK, but the 2.6.20 kernel fixes a couple of hardware issues I have on one machine. Whoever finds the solution will get his / her place in my personal hall of fame.

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

Maybe help for someone...

I've played with udev utils, and i found this:

.when i plug out my pendrive and from konsole i run the udevplug command, -after its finished- i plug the pen in, then it show up on the desktop, and everything works fine... but just once...

I'l try to recompile the udev system, maybe help...

Regards,
A.

one more thing

when i bootin with the pendrive plugged in, it works fine, but when i remove it, next time nothing happens...

its misterious...

seems someone has solved this for me

I came across a link that has solved this for me.

http://www.mepis.org/node/11934#comment-44451

I followed the excellently explained steps and it all worked perfectly.

Hope it helps.

ok, at least partial success

Well, it works but only sometimes. It always works initially. Once I turn on my system, within the first few minutes, I can plug in a usb drive and it will auto detect it and create an icon for it on the desktop. Sometimes, hours later, I can try it and it still works. Sometimes, just a few minutes later, it will no longer auto mount them.

I am not certain what the random element is. I will keep experimenting.

Please confirm if anyone else has the same results or if anyone can think of anything else to try.

good for 5 minutes

OK, it seems it is good for only about 5 minutes. Here is what I did to test.

After configuring as indicated in the previous link, it seemed fine. But, it only works for about 5 minutes after all usb have been removed. If I boot up, without any usb deviced connected, within 5 minutes of boot up I can connect a usb thumb drive and it will auto mount on the desktop. If I leave it in, all is good. If I remove it, I have another 5 minutes to reinsert another usb device, and it will auto mount. If I wait longer, it goes back to ignoring the device.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Troubleshooting

If you run the terminal command

dmesg

after plugging in a device, you could see if there are any error messages. As for for figuring them out, well... Post them and maybe we can try.

dmesg output

OK, here is the output from dmesg:

[ 1307.993946] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
[ 1308.991585] ehci_hcd 0000:00:0b.1: Unlink after no-IRQ? Controller is probably using the wrong IRQ.
[ 1319.546645] usb 1-2: device not accepting address 2, error -110
[ 1319.655150] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
[ 1331.204188] usb 1-2: device not accepting address 3, error -110
[ 4939.275610] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
[ 4950.825712] usb 1-2: device not accepting address 5, error -110
[ 4950.939143] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6

There was a lot more, but this was at the end. Before this it was talking about the ABORTED IN=wlan0 ... and did not seem pertinent.

Any thoughts?

I will reboot and plug the device in within 5 minutes and see what it says, then wait 10 minutes and try again. I will post the results.

Thanks for the feedback. Please send whatever suggestions or ideas you have.
