If you're using SimplyMEPIS 3.4.3 or earlier, use the CUPS Web Interface to add it. The printer may show up more than once in the list. Make sure to select the printer name with the underscore characters in it. Basically, click on this link and the CUPS Web Interface will load in a browser:
If you're using SimplyMEPIS 6.x, use KDE to add it (KMenu>System Settings>Peripherals>Printers. But, make sure you select the printer name with the underscore characters in it (it will show up more than once).

I'm using an HP PSC-1410 with no issues printing or scanning after installing one that way (making sure to select the printer with the underscore characters in it's name).
