Can't get HP PSC 1510 All-in-One installed
Posts: 107
Tried the printer wizard to install my HP 1510 all in one printer with no success. Have read many sites/forums trying to figure it out. This printer is supposed to work very well on linux. When using the wizard it detects my printer as a HP 1500 which seems close enough, so selecting it and being careful to choose the one with the underscores I try to print a test page and nothing happens. So after numerous attempts I tried going the cups route however it got really complicated so quit at that point. Any suggestions?
Its working now

Thanks for your quick response Jim. After reading your reply I tried the wizard again to see which driver I had selected. As it turns out I had not scrolled down far enough on printer manufacturer so I was selecting Hewlett Packard instead of HP. After selecting HP the rest of the setup was a piece of cake, very impressed. Thanks again.

I got an all-in-one F380 and I could install it in printers using F300 driver however in order to make the scanner work I had to reinstall hp tools: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/ so keep that in mind if you don't succeed (use it only in case you can't make it work otherwise)

Yep, it's a bit out of date

Yes, the HPLIP in the repositories is a bit out of date.
It's on version 0.9.7, released over a year ago. I don't understand why the package maintainers don't update it more often. HP is good enough to provide utilties and drivers for Linux. But, the repositories are always way behind what HP offers (usually, by many versions).
I can remember switching my wife from SimplyMEPIS back to Windows at one point, just because HPLIP was so out of date and I couldn't get a new printer to work right in SimplyMEPIS 3.3.x. Fortunately, Warren updated it in 3.4.3 to a newer one that worked OK during the 3.4.x development cycle (and the Debian repositories were still way behind the current version at the time).
Now, with SimplyMEPIS 6.0, the same thing applies to the packages in the Ubuntu repositories (they tend to be very out of date for some things like HPLIP).
Anyway, it sounds like the OP was just looking in the wrong place for the driver (the PSC-1510 is listed under HP versus Hewlett Packard).

What version of SimplyMEPIS?

I'm using an HP PSC-1410 that I choose HP PSC-1400 with.
It's probably about the same as your printer.
Are you using a newer version of SimplyMEPIS? With 3.4.3, you may need to use the CUPS Web Interface to add it instead of KDE.
With SimplyMEPIS 6.0, you'll want to use the KDE Control Center to add it (using the printer name with the underscore characters in it as you mentioned).
What driver are you picking? More than one will come up in the list. I use the one with HPIJS after it.
I've got some screen prints in this thread:
http://www.mepis.org/node/11444
If you can't get it to work, I'll be glad to reinstall my HP PSC-1410 and make sure to capture every screen in case you're doing something different on one of the screens that's causing an issue.
You may also want to make sure you don't have any print jobs in the queue causing it to stall (you'll find a jobs tab when you go to KMenu>System Settings (Configuration)>Peripherals>Printers and click on the printer you have installed). Delete any jobs in the queue in case you've got something in it causing problems.
Is the printer showing up in the HPLIP toolbox? If so, it should be installed OK. If not, something went wrong during the install. Check KMenu>Utilities>Peripherals>Printer Toolbox (HPLIP Toolbox).
