I don't want this: acpi=off
Hi everyone;
This topic was a solved problem, but I'd really like another option.
I was advised to add "acpi=off" in the menu.lst to avoid a bouncy mousecursor and a system from freezing every 30 seconds or so...
And it did work, very good indeed! BUT, I cannot see when the laptop-battery turns near it's end, it just quits after an hour or two, or sooner when using dvd/cd's.
So what can I do here, what hardware-info should I place in this thread so anyone of you can help me getting this "BUG"(???) to the past?
I'm talking about a Compaq Evo N1050v laptop, 30Gb HD, 1024Mb Ram, 1,8GHz processor, so it's quite modern (+/-three years of age),
so there could/should be a modern answer other than "acpi=off".
Or am I "deadwrong"?
You have to know, that I use Mepis (13,5Gb) on one partition and the other partition is used for
Edubuntu (13,5Gb, Swap uses the rest) for the kids because they really love the GCompriz games...
Edubuntu probably uses some other kind of powermanagement, because it gives no acpi problem at all?!?
I know Mepis is based on Ubuntu, and maybe I'm way wrong on presuming in this matter,
but shouldn't both distro's respond and act the same than?
HELP, TIA!!!
Really like the beta3!
No bugs found.
Ruud

try a BIOS update
See if there is a BIOS update on the HP/Compaq web site. This may help.
Other possibilities
Here's something -- add another boot cheat code
acpi=off apm=on
That might fix it! -- you may need to turn the battery monitor back on in KDE control center.
1) Try this
apt-get install gnome-power-manager
(I don't know if it works under kde, but there's a good chance it will, and it may give better power management)
2) Fix the ACPI by compiling a corrected DSDT into the kernel
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Fix_Common_ACPI_Problems
http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/index.php
3) Try other boot cheat codes in place of acpi=off
There are several possibilities. Chances are, if one works, you'll have the same problems you have with acpi=off
First one to try is
noacpi
others are
pci=noacpi
noapic
Mike
great forum http://www.mepislovers.com
I'll leave the laptop to 3.4-3 max.
Hi Mike;
Well I've tried all the options you gave, but to no avail.

MEGA-bummer!
So that's why I'll leave the laptop to a earlier and lighter version than 6.0.
Something like MepisLite or up to 3.4-3 maximum, these versions will work anyhow...
Thanks again for your tips and hints!
Ruud
bug?
Ruud,
have you filed a bug with warren yet?
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
Hi Carlops
Hi Carlops;
No, but I have not found out where I could find a way to do such a thing, although I'm here for about half a year now, I still don't now such a thing...
I've asked in the opening of this topic: So what can I do here, what hardware-info should I place in this thread so anyone of you can help me getting this "BUG"(???) to the past?, still unanswered...
Ruud
bug
best thing to do is either send a detailed hardware list and symptom description to , or use the list that you have been added to
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
Detailed?
Do you know if there is any file where I can find all info on this laptop? Something like /etc/hardware and don't chuckle now, I'm only into graphics and eager to loose M$ Windows of all machines here... Hahaha!
Ruud
hardware
you can do lspci and lsusb in console. That will be the most important info. Also mention laptop make and model
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
Here's the output
Hi Carlops;
I've used lshw. (List Hardware I presume?)
I have sent it to Warren.
Here's the output:
The laptop is a Compaq Evo N1050v, 1024Mb Ram, 30Gb HD.

Would you know what happens here?
Ruud
lshw
Hi Ruud,
lshw is even better.... And sorry, no idea what is happening. My guess is an irq conflict of some sorts, but not really sure. You could try booting with the option 'irqpoll'.
Cheers
BTW: How are things in the old country? Storm settled a little?
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
Storm?
Hi Carlops;
Storm settled, garden fence blew away, but all is well,
everyone survived, well, in my family that is!
Insurance is going to be busy next weeks...
I'll try irqpoll, what does it stand for?
Wouldn't it be an idea to have a (small) library with the commands explained?
On the site of another Linux distro I found very helpful info.
I wouldn't mind being this helpful to Mepis Newbies in the same way?!?
WE ARE HELPFUL! We have a library, in the Docs project, I'm so SORRY for not looking it up there!
Apologies...
Ruud
