2.6 to 2.4 kernel

My old computer (9 years old) doesn't seem to like the 2 6 kernel (things run s l oooooooo w l y with it and the icewm process monitor usually shows high activity) and while discussing this with some local linux geeks they suggested putting the 2 4 kernel in because the 2 6 kernel isn't meant for older hardware. I searched the net for how to do this and after asking the geeks about a page I had found the suggested asking you guys about how I should go about doing this.

I have downloaded the 2.4.33 and 2.4.34 and am awaiting instructions.
Also, I ran synaptic and got the 2.4.27 kernel (I think it was 27) packages that were there and that seemed to speed things up a bit but things are still slower than when I had the pre 2 6 mepis. Does this mean it is as good as it gets for me?

MepisLite

You might

You might try SM3.4.3 too! I was playing with an old K6-2 400 MGHZ board a couple of weeks ago and it did better than MEPIS Lite on that via chipset for me. Unfortunately for the older chips time is passing them by, things are too heavy for them to be speedy. I couldnt get Lite to boot right or run on that one, but ya dont know till you try it.

sm3.4.3

is that SimplyMepis 3.4.3?
could you give me a link if not (and if so)?

you know.... I would go back to the first Mepis I had (2003.10.02) if apt wouldn't try to upgrade KDE because that seems to break it every time I upgraded it. Why would I go back? Because EVERYTHING worked. (PDA/WebCAM/Camera/memeory card)
Or else have they made it so that upgrdin KDE is painless?

If you are looking for linux this is a good place to start cause they have just about all flavors including several of Mepis.

jim EDIT: And if memory serves it has both kernels.
